I was wondering how many of you have seen the people in Rick's videos when you've travelled? In Wales we saw the slate demonstration by the same man as in Rick's show. In Salzburg we saw the same musicians at the concert at Mirabell palace (except not the man, the other three women were the same); and not surprisingly the man from Sporer. He spent quite a lot of time with us giving us free samples before we purchased. None of our trips were anywhere near the same time frame as marked in the credits of the shows. Have you had any of these experiences too?
I've never seen the featured artists, but I met the presenter himself on Rue Cler in Paris a few years ago and thanked him for motivating my wife and me to move back here. Does that count?
Andrea, Yes, I've also seen encountered some of the people featured in the TV shows during my travels. This mostly occurs during RS Tours, as he uses many of the same local Guides. One example is the retired Police Chief in Dingle, who now provides tours of the local area. He provide an excellent tour of local historic sites.
I was travelling independently when I ran into these people. Other than the Sporer guy I didn't realize they were the same people until I happened to watch the episodes again.
Yes, traveling independently I have run into some of the people in Rick's videos as well, a couple of times because I was looking at recommendations in Rick's books and a couple of times out of mere happenstance.
Matt L, "The innkeeper of the Albergo Bernini in Siena, Italy, really did serenade us in his parlor and played the accordion for us". Unfortunately, I wasn't able to experience an Accordion serenade on my last visit to Albergo Bernini as the parents were out of town for a short vacation at the time (the Son and daughter-in-law were looking after things). I stopped by Albergo Bernini for a quick visit when I was in Siena in May, and it appears the Hotel has "changed hands". The new owners seem very nice, and I'll likely stay there again on my next visit to Siena. Cheers!
The innkeeper of the Albergo Bernini in Siena, Italy, really did serenade us in his parlor and played the accordion for us, just like on the video.
We stayed at the same place Rick stayed in his show from Dingle. It was funny to see a Christmas card from Rick hanging on her wall (complete with a picture of the family sitting on a smart cart). We had fun making the owner blush when we told her that she was on American TV! We also stayed at a recommended place in Colmar. We were talking to the daughter of the owner, and she said they had never heard of Rick, but he stayed there one year, then showed up the next year with his filming crew.
I saw the Prague show long after I visited, but I think the band playing by the gates of the castle may have performed the day I was there... or at least there was some band, I'm not sure if it was the same one.
We saw the band in Prague at the castle.
Having taken 8 RS tours and not having gone back to any of those places YET, we do get a real kick out of watching RS DVDs of places in Europe where we have been and seeing the same folks we saw when we were there.
On our trip to Bruges, we toured De Halve Mann Brewery and the tour guide showcased in his episode, was our tour guide. She had a great sense of humor. I showed her the clip on my iphone and she blushed. She said she sees many people on her tour holding their blue bible. And of course, the Nightwatch man in Rothenburg. I have taken that tour twice. He also has a great sense of humor
i'm not sure if it was on tv, but i got a huge kick out of buying the cookies from the cloistered nuns in madrid mentioned in his spain book.
We saw 2 people from his shows in Switzerland. We met Olly, the schoolteacher in Gimmelwald. He was fun to talk to and said Rick stops by to visit him each year. We also saw the older gentleman at the Fortress Furigen outside of Luzern. He was politely surprised when we told him we had seen him on TV in America! :)
We've seen the "Beefeater" who gave us our tour at Tower of London on several shows (not just RS).
Two come to mind at present: The night watchman in Rothenburg odT and the couple who own Albergo Milano in Varenna, Italy.
We have never met such people but have met many with whom we had experiences that we will not forget.
Yes, I've seen people over the years in Europe that have appeared on Rick's show. Mainly, the hotel owners (for instance, I recognized the couple that owns Pension Peters in Berlin, the ones who own Hotel Kranenturn in Bacharach and 1 of the women who manages the front desk at Hotel Am Markt in Baden-Baden). Because I had seen some of the RS episodes more than once, kind of felt like I knew these people already when I saw them!
Like Tom and DK, I also saw the band at Prague Castle that was featured on his show...and they were quite good!
