The head of KLM is awfully sorry

from an email blast they sent out, here is what they are planning for Schipol:

We reduced the number of flights swiftly to go back to the reliable service and quality you may expect from KLM
• We don’t sell all our available seats and therefore keep some seats available for passengers who have missed a flight or had their original flight cancelled. We apply the same policy to luggage if needed
• We have extended transfer times between flights, giving you more time to make your connecting flight at Schiphol Airport and reducing stress for you and our airport staff serving you
• At the special request of Schiphol Airport, we are actively monitoring and managing the total number of Dutch passengers boarding at Amsterdam to ease the rush at security and customs checks at peak hours

Hahah...I just added this to the "no bags on July 21" thread.

My thought is at least they have a plan and are implementing.

I didn't get the last point about "Monitoring the total number of Dutch passengers"....So RnR and DutchTraveler and Kateja should go back to acting American? (Not really sure about DutchTraveler's heritage...no insult intended!).

I guess it's like not letting the locals gamble in Macau?

Delta airlines gave me 10,000 additional miles in my FF account just yesterday because of my travel woes in June. Coming home from Bergen, my flight was canceled on KLM, Delta’s partner. At least the airlines are working on solutions. A difficult time for all of us.

I was fine with the email. Its tough all in the service industry. I am still waiting for my miles to show up on my Delta account from a canceled/rescheduled flight with KLM in May. Not sure how many times I'm supposed to "request the miles" and its not a ton pf miles but .....

Pam, I think for "Dutch passengers" they mean Dutch residents i.e. people who are trying to board flights who start in Amsterdam rather than people like for example Judy, who transferred from a flight from Norway to the U.S.

In that sense, our Kate and Ron would both count as "Dutch passengers" even though they are not Dutch citizens.

Of course I could also be completely wrong !!!

Judy - so glad that they made a gesture given the pain in the patooty that you had trying to depart Bergen !!

Finally given the title of this thread, I was hoping this was an email from the KLM CEO direct to James hahahahhaha

I got that same email.
I'm puzzled how they can "extend times between transfers", when your plane arrives at a certain time, and the next departs at a certain time!

In my case, they have done the opposite; as yesterday they let me know that my first flight home in the Fall was cancelled and rebooked............ with a 25 minute gap instead of the original 2 hours, between that flight landing in AMS and the next one taking off.

I'm thinking they've got hold of a TimeTurner, as in the Harry Potter movies........

We always held KLM in high regard as an airline. Last October, we flew on a KLM flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam.

The flight attendants were hunkered down in the kitchen--avoiding unneeded contact with passengers. The supper meal was absolutely the worse food I've ever experienced in my 52 years of international travel.

Our return flight on Delta from AMS to ATL had a really good meal. And we were "floating" from so many beverages served. The flight crew was great.

I'm sorry AMS is having personnel issues right now. It's always been one of our favorite airports. Hopefully things will normalize in the near future. KLM obviously has problems of their own not associated with the state of Schiphol Airport.

We leave for Amsterdam on Delta 3 August.
I decided to use sky miles for the RT from home to AMS, the purchased a separate ticket from Qatar Airways (far more reasonable than Delta/KLM) to East Africa for our safari.

We arrive AMS 4 August about 8am and depart the next day for Africa at 4:15PM. Staying at the Hilton walking distance from the airport.

Not looking forward to the long wait lines for checking in and security. I understand they are putting porta potties outside next to the long security line. I am wondering it I should buy adult diapers to wear, since the wait can be 3-4 hours, even with the porta potty.

@Geovagriffith - at least there are 2 of you so you can trade off when you are in sight of the portapotties. I hope you'll let us know how your airport experience goes! There is a Yotel in the secure airside area of Schiphol. I've never stayed in them but understand they are minimalist but it would keep you from having to go thru the check in IF you could do it with separate tickets.
