I've liked my Andiamo luggage. It's expensive, but has stood up to a lot of abuse. It has hard sides, but it's top is soft and expandable. I've had my current suitcase for over ten years and it's handled my 60% work travel as well as personal trips to Europe. I'm sure others will have more suggestions. Luggage becomes a very personal decision if you travel a lot. ; ) Pam

Check out HEYS luggage. Hard shell with wheels and the lightest luggage that we could find in this style. We use this luggage for resort/golf holidays and are very pleased with it. Comes in many colours and patterns, can't be missed on the conveyor belt!

I also bought a Heys USA 20" carry-on for my wife. It's light and has a semi-hard plastic shell (but isn't really good for checking - gets scratched too easily and isn't really hard sided). For checked luggage, hard sided luggage would be better. I think the packaging of the individual item is at least as important as the bag itself. The best technique for wine would be a box with some soft material (bubble wrap) inside. Usually bubble wrap plus a big plastic bag (to catch any leaks) works fine when surrounded by your clothes. There is a limit to what you can bring (subject to federal and state limits). As long as it's clearly for personal use (rather than resale), you only pay duty rather than the heavier "importers" permit.

i've looked at The Worlds Lightest Luggage at AAA store, and it is amazingly light.... it is approved for checking in baggage, but seems like it would rip or tear... does anyone have any recommendations... i don't care if I have to check my bag.... but want the lightest weight possible, so I can take a little more back home....

Chris - I don't know what your requirements are for weight with regard to light luggage, but I like Delsey luggage. It's a good brand and they even advertise the luggage as "feather-light."

As Sarah recommends, Delsey luggage has always done well by me. I have their "bullet proof" models as well as their newer "light weight" models and use whichever is best for the trip. However, when going to Europe every summer, I only take my RS 21" roller bag. I got most of the Delseys on sale for at least 50% off and some 65% off at Macy's.
