My first son, 14yrs old loved the Catacombs in Paris,, because they are creepy, underground, totally unlike anything he'd seen before.. and will ever see again I imagine. He also loved the Eiffel Tower,, because we climbed the stairs, which gives one a unique perspective.
My next son,, also then 14,, loved Thorpe Park in Uk,, because the roller coaster type rides were amazing,, he also still talks about his dad driving 200 kph on the autobahn in Germany( note, I was not there!)
My 12 yr old daughter loved St Peters Basilica,, she said it was the most amazing over the top thing she had ever seen, she by then had already been in serveral other famous or renown cathederals,, and St Peters just blew her away. She also said her other favorite site was the gardens at Versailles and Marie Antionettes Hamlet at Versailles.

My 13-year-old niece says that if she could go to Europe tomorrow, she would go to Germany, but would happily join me in Scotland on Wednesday. ; ) I am pretty sure she's interested in Germany because of her dad's background.
My oldest nephew's first trip to Europe was to a concert in Amsterdam 6 or so years ago. He and his girlfriend got cheap tickets out of Chicago and just went. I was very proud of him. His brother dreamt of going to Europe and ended up marrying a young woman from Lithuania so that's where he's been. Nathan just wants to see the world if ever can find the money.
My youngest nephew will go where there are trains and drag his sister with him.

GREAT responses! (And I know it took you more than ten seconds to fill in).
Thank you for such thorough replies. We're planning a trip for next year and with that big old map to choose from, your answers are a great help.
Happy travels!

My sons loved Rhotenburg's Crime and Punishment museum because of the torture devices.
My kids loved Rheinfels castle because they could explore the ruins, climb, crawl and imagine.
Warwick Castle because he could visualize medieval castle life when he visited. Parts of the dungeon helped him empathize with the plight of the prisoners. He also enjoyed Urquart Castle, Notre Dame, Edinburgh Castle, and Dryburgh Abbey. He was 13 at the time. He enjoyed Cornwall, but thought the Cotwalds and northern Wales were dull.
Our nephew loved climbing to the top of Notre Dame Cathedral because of the challenge of the climb, the view of Paris, and seeing the gargoyles close up!
My daughter, then 7, loved walking the city wall in Rothenberg!
:)
My son loved riding the sommerrodelbahn (luge) because it's exhilarating. They can be found in Reutte and Biberwier, Austria. Also, in the town close to Neuschwanstein castle. These are listed in Rick's guidebooks. He also loved looking at, and going inside of, a windmill. A canal ride through Amsterdam is also fun.
My nephew loved Spain because of the food -- he loves fresh creepy crawlies from the sea.
My 2 year old daughter loved the Academia because there was a ramp she could run up and down, and the cast/sclupture room was like a race track. I took her around her first birthday and she enjoyed it then too. (Lucky baby has been twice) When she was 1, she clapped and laughed when she saw David. When she was 2 she still took a moment and actually looked at David. She also enjoyed the Termes in Slovenia. They are really family friendly and the pools are heated. You can find any of a the Slovenia termes www.Slovenia.info

They loved the gelato in Italy but missed the specialty dishes like spagetti ice cream. I had to reassure them that we will have gelato when we go to Germany in December.
My kids love Germany because of the train rides, especially the ICE.
My nephew, when his age was 17, liked being at Warwick castle in England. There he walked up the steps to the top of the tall tower, in the rain.
