CAN YOU GET FREE TAP WATER TO DRINK IN GERMANY? i KNOW IN FRANCE IT IS A LAW THEY HAVE TO GIVE IT TO YOU, BUT IN CENTRAL EUROPE WHEN WE ASKED THEY REFUSED TO GIVE US ANY.

I was on the Rick Steves Berlin, Prague and Vienna tour last summer and we had no problem getting tap water. When we were in Prague we did find that water--tap or bottled--was more expensive than the beer!

In Germany, if you would like tap water, ask for "Wasser vom hand"(Vasser fom hahn) If you would like bottled water with fizz, "Wasser mit gas", and no gas is "Ohne gas". (Ohne is oh-nah) They may look at you funny as not many people drink tap water, but they do have it and it is usually free.

Thank you for the helpful post Linda. It's a good thing my next trip is in Italy, because I'm nearly fluent in Italian!
By the way, I wonder why there are two "Tap Water" threads that were made around the same time!
