Taking the back roads from Trento to Vicenza

We have lived in Germany for 9 years and have traveled to Vicenza quite often to see our son. Every time we drive through northern Italy and the Dolomites I wonder what's back there and/or it is worth stopping to see one of the many castles that we see from the autobahn. I would like just once to get off the autobahn/autostrade and try a different route to Vicenza. Is there anything on the way that would be worth stopping to see? Do you suggest a specific road? We are not looking to stay anywhere - just do a little sight seeing on the way. We've been in Verona and Venice many times. I'm think country villages.
Hope someone has some good ideas. Thanks

Thanks for the kickstart, Deborah. My trip report is just about to reach the bit about the back roads around Vicenza where my wife and I had a lovely week and a bit more exploring said back roads. I'll get on the stick. Long story short- loads of stuff to see. And Vicenza does itself pretty well too.

I like to take the Trento Nord exit which straddles the Brenta River all the way down through Valsugana to Valstagna and then Bassano del Grappa. If you want dramatic mountain scenery, you can take the Roverto exit which goes along some somewhat scary roads on the way to Schio via Mt. Pasubio. Some beautiful scenery.
