Taking side trips: Should I notify the hotel?

My wife and I will be taking a two-week trip in May to Lisbon, which we purchased as an airfare/hotel package deal. We're also planning a side trip of 4 nights in Milan, leaving the hotel room empty.

Should I notify the hotel that we'll be gone for those four nights? Or is it sufficient to just put up a DND sign?

Tim,

I agree with Jo. It would be a good idea to keep the Hotel "in the picture". That will help to minimize any issues.

Happy travels!

Definately inform the hotel that you will be gone. In many areas they notify police when guests have not returned even if bill is paid. Or if the hotel locks it doors at certain hrs they will keep a hotel employee on duty waiting for you.

That is an interesting question. I think you would want to notify them. If you are paying for the room, it shouldn't make any difference. But if they observed no activity for a couple days, they might wonder what happen to you. I would not notify them till you got there. Who knows, maybe you could get a little refund especially if the hotel is crowded.

Speaking as a former hotel manager, you really should let the hotel know when you leave. Simply putting up a DND sign is not the proper thing to do. When a housekeeper sees this DND sign 2 days in a row, the 1st thing that comes to mind is that the person inside the room is very ill or has died. So, please do tell the front desk.

Do you have to pay for the room even though you are not there? You may want to find out if the hotel needs this room, as they may have someone waiting on a room. If they can use your room for a couple of days, you might get your own room bill lowered.

Yes -- definitely notify your hotel.

It is possible they could consider the room abandoned if they realize you are not there. Besides, it is just polite.
