Taking pictures in European Museums?

When I visited the British Museum I was suprised to see the museum allowing pictures to be taken. Where else in the European museum community can you take pictures?
( Pictures taken were regular and flash.)

Greetings

It really depends - I remember some museums in Belgium allowed photos, some did not. The best thing is to look for signs or ask. And I generally avoid flash inside, even if it is permitted, as it can be distracting to other people.

My brochure from the British Museum says "still, digital or video photography is permitted only for non-commercial and personal use unless otherwise stated. Please ask at the Information Desk for details."

It's been my experience that most museums allow non-flash photography for the permanent collections but usually not for a special exhibit. It's a good idea to check with a security guard or at the Information Desk when you enter the museum.

I always ask, no matter which museum in which country, if I may take photographs. Often the answer is "Yes, but not with flash."

Most museums post their policies on photograhpy. Also, you should ask if in doubt. The most restricted are art museums where flash over the long term can damage the paintings. Or, special exibits may be restricted. We saw the Cezanne exhibit in Florence last year (wonderful) and it was "no photograpy".

Oddly, even in museums where no photography is allowed and they require you to check your bags and backpacks, they always let you keep your camera. Guess what frequently happens?

Most of the state museums in Russia allow photography... if you pay an extra fee.
