Which Skype app for the iPhone does one use to make wireless calls. And does the person called have to be a Skype account holder? I would like to know more about these Skype apps and if they might be helpful instead of or in addition to international calling cards in France and Italy. Thank you.
if both parties on the call are on skype, then it's free, otherwise skype to non-skype call are charged but not at international roaming rates on cellphone, or international cards.
We used Skype last year in Spain. It was like .10/minute. You have to open an account, put at least 10 bucks in the pot. We run off an ipad 1 and it worked fine BUT you are dependent on the quality and speed of the wifi connections. Face time between Apple products is even easier to use.
We used Skype last year in Spain on both our IPhone and a net book. It requires a wi-fi connection, which is not as easy to find in Italy as they are here. (But wi-fi is always available at Mickey D's and at most accomodations.) It is very easy to load Skype on your device. It is a free download. and calls from one Skype user to another, on a computer device, are also free. You can also use it to call any phone line, anywhere, for about $2.3 cents/minute. Since I am on AT&T I also signedup for their overseas calling plan, which let me use my phone for texts and calls. I made sure that data was shut off on my phone. My cousin was on Verizon, and most of their phones will not work in the EU. They sent her a special phone in the mail, for just a few bucks, and she signed up for their overseas calling plan. Both of us also signed up for an overseas Texting plan. That was the cheapest communication method that we could use at any time. (unless we brought/bought unlocked cell phone and loaded EU SIM cards in them.)
We are currently traveling in Great Britain, Portugal and Spain with both an iPad and an iPhone. We have Skype loaded on both and Data Roaming turned off on both. We use our devices when we have wifi available which has been fairly reliably available every where we have stayed. We use AT&T and did not purchase an International plan because Skype meets most of our phone calling needs. We have made occasional nonskype calls from the iPhone and received a few non-wifi text messages each month, but our phone bill has never increased by more than $10-15 a month while traveling, so an international plan just doesn't seem worth it for us.
As others have said, if you have a good wifi connection, you can call anywhere for 2¢/min plus 7¢ connection fee or free to someone on a computer. We regularly use it for calls from our home to Europe and to call the States and other countries when abroad. The sound quality is as good as a regular call. Skype is pretty simple to set up and the app is easy to use.
There is only one Skype app for calling. Just search for Skype in the app store. Skype for wifi is something different and appears to be for logging into paid wifi hot spots. The plain old "Skype" is free to another skype user when you're on a wifi network. As others have said, there's a small fee to call a regular phone number. Make sure you know how to turn off your data roaming.
I am aware of two Skype applications (programs). The most common is Skype and works easily and well on smartphones, tablets, laptop computers and desktop computers. The other is Skype mobile pushed by Verizon. There is no apparent value to me in Verizon's version.
