Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein

We, (my husband and I, and possibly son and his wife) will have about 2 1/2 weeks in these counties, beginning and ending in Basel. What route would you recommend (haven't decided whether we will travel by train or car yet),? What are "must sees", or hidden treasures?? We will be traveling sometime between mid-June and mid-August 2018.

Thanks in advance

There are enough top-class sights in Switzerland and Italy to keep you occupied for months, probably years. You need to think about what sort of experiences you want during your trip: mountains (walking or looking?), beaches, historical museums, art museums, archaeological museums, natural history museums, palaces, Roman ruins, markets, walking tours, cooking classes, active sports, historical landmarks, etc.

Traveling in Switzerland is very, very expensive. For some us, that would mean less time in Switzerland and more in Italy.

Do you plan to rent a car? You'll need to drop it off in the same country where you picked it up unless you're prepared for an extremely high additional charge. For most itineraries, trains are sufficient when supplemented by the occasional bus or lake boat. I do not know about Liechtenstein.

As stated above, we haven't decided train or car, but I'm thinking train. Not sure what we want to see. I'd love to here what YOU would see and why? We'll figure out the rest 😊

The first thing I would do is skip Liechtenstein. You don't even get a passport stamp there anymore.

It is fine for us to say what we would do but how are we supposed to know if that is the sort of thing the 4 of you like or not.

You could at least tell us what sort of previous experience you have in Italy and Switzerland.

What is attracting you to those two countries?

No previous experience in either. And honestly, nothing in particular other than to want to explore them. We were hoping a few kind travelers would tell us their experiences in these two countries and what they loved, and then, after enjoying hearing about those travels, we'd decide what we'd like to do. It's how we planned our Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Paris trip last year and it worked like a charm. Thank you!
