Switzerland and Italy In Nov - packing tips!!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe, most likely late October and into November. We plan to visit Switzerland and Italy for sure, possibly France and Holland.
We want to pack light (like Rick Steeves and everyone on this site suggests) but are not sure what to pack.
What is the weather like? It will be cool - definitely in the Alps.
Any suggestions for what to pack?
This is our first adventure to Europe on our own and need some guidence!

There is little guidance to that question other than to pack a series of light weight layers that be added or subtracted as the temperature indicates. We have both a winter and summer packing lists but the differences are slight. I would plan for weather that probably matches your area. (Not sure where your area is other than north of here) In our packing list we add light weight long underwear, change a short sleeve shirt to long sleeve, change the light weight wool sweater to a medium weight, add a fleece vest for under the rain jacket, add stocking cap, scarf, gloves. The rest stays pretty much the same.

Your answer is layering and wearing your heavier clothes during the trip. I would definitely take a cashmere turtleneck (packs light and is warm) to wear alone or under a fleece pullover and over that a lightweight but lined waterproof jacket with hood (Goretex with thinsulate lining is what I use); possibly silk long johns and undershirt (keeps the wool sweater from itching), warm socks, gloves, hat and scarf. Good walking shoes are a must and a second pair of lightweight shoes would be good. The weather could be nice and sunny or wet and miserable. Fleece, cashmere and silk all pack light. Have fun!

I emailed you personally about this, but something I forgot to tell you, that silk is warm and light weight and easy to pack. I brought long silk underwear and a silk under shirt. But guess what! When I went to Italy and Switzerland this past November, it was too warm to wear them! You never know about the weather. Check out a weather website shortly before you pack.

I am a pro layering.
Two years ago I found some "thicker" very stretch long sleeve tops that kept me warm all over Europe.
You can find those anywhere, I prefer TJ max. I got 3 colors, and took 2 of them with me.
Another kind of top I like is the micro fleece. They take little room and are very warm.
I also have a black jacket taht has a fleece layer inside, whcih is good for winter time, but sometimes I get too warm.

It can be quite warm in Italy in November, another reason (not that you need one) to layer.
