“Supplemental super-vitamins, taken regularly, help to at least feel healthy”

These are Rick Steves’ words of advice about how to stay (or feel) healthy while traveling that he wrote in the section entitled “Tips for Healthy, Happy Travels”.

I know what vitamin supplements are. What exactly are ‘super-vitamin’ supplements? What are examples of them? Thanks.

Is he a dietician? Eat a balanced diet - you don't need pills unless you have a diagnosed deficiency

Lissie is right. Don't haul vitamins on your trip unless you already need them. Eat right and more importantly, get the proper rest. Usually on vacation you are expending a lot of extra energy and it is easy to get run down.

I take a lot of supplements. Some are part of David Sinclair's longevity recently supplements and some others for my eyes. But I don't take the full collection when I travel. I'm very consistent with my regime so I don't think 2 weeks is significant in the big picture. The only thing I carry when traveling are the only prescription that I take ,Crestor, Coq10 10 and a specific probiotic.

The best method for feeling healthy on vacation, assuming you felt healthy when you started the trip, is: don't drink too much and get a good night's sleep.

Eating well and sleeping well are not always on my agenda when traveling and not always even possible. :) So, yes I do take some vitamin supplements with me, mainly a multi-vitamin and a vitamin D capsule (both recommended by my doctor).

By the way, the whole advice from RS is: "Eat nutritiously. The longer your trip, the more you'll be affected by an inadequate diet. Budget travelers often eat more carbohydrates and less protein to stretch their travel dollars. This is the root of many health problems. Protein helps you resist infection and rebuilds muscles. Get the most nutritional mileage from your protein by eating it with the day's largest meal (in the presence of all those essential amino acids). Supplemental super-vitamins, taken regularly, help me to at least feel healthy."

Sometimes quoting things out of context distorts the advice being given.

"Don't drink too much" only applies to alcohol. Make sure you drink plenty of water!

I wasn’t quoting anything out of context. I asked for the definition of “super vitamins” of which Rick Steves had written. I don’t know much about the supplement market and I was curious what “super vitamins” are. I never asked for advice; I asked for a definition. Come on now. I very much appreciate that people here took the time to offer their advice.

I never asked for advice;

I get that. My comment was referring to 'Rick Steves' ''words of advice'' (as you put it in your post) - actually his advice was that they helped HIM to at least feel healthy when he wasn't always eating healthy while traveling. I don't think he was advising people that taking them would help THEM to feel healthy. So you could say that you misquoted him. And I said it was out of context because so many responses were about not needing them if you eat healthy - which was the first part of his statement. Maybe I'm just too picky about when someone quotes someone else and it is misleading.

As to what they are, he may have been referring to Super Multivitamins, a daily multivitamin called a Super Daily Formula. Several companies market them.

If you think you need the supplements at home, why discontinue them when traveling?

If you don't think you need them when traveling, why take them at home?

Why are you asking us what Rick means? Why not ask Rick? It is 2022 after all, it's not like you have to drive to Edmund Washington and stalk him.

Continental - I thought this was spam until I saw that you were the OP! WTF was he talking about? I wonder if he even knows.

As for me and my husband, we brought our PreserVision for macular degeneration and lived happily ever after.

I’m glad I passed the spam test, Estimated Prophet! 🙂 I had never heard of the term “super vitamins“ which was why I thought somebody here might know.
