Summer vs. off-season: much difference price-wise?

My boyfriend and I will be travelling throughout Europe (Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, & hopefully Spain and Portugal). Will it be much cheaper if we wait until the end of August as opposed to going in July? I don't mind heat and crowds! We will mostly be staying in hostels and buying groceries. Thanks for any input.

If your schedule allows, travel either in April, first of May, middle of September or first of October. I have traveled in January. The cost for my RT air, six night 3 star hotel with full breakfast was only $499.00!

In most of the countries you mentioned school summer break is July and August so that pricewise there isn't really a difference. Very generally speaking the weather in August tends to be better than in July. Best travel month for great weather and lower prices is September.

Depending on where you travel, you probably won't need air-conditioning in September. There is an extra charge for this in some hotels. Start in the north at the beginning of Sept. and work your way south to Spain and Portugal later in the month.

We did London and Paris the first 2 weeks of September and the crowds were extremely small. I suspect that the reason is most teachers and families with children are all back in school and I've heard that the convention crowd is Paris is more toward the last of the month. It was a great time to travel. The weather was warm and perfect. Also we went to Spain the last 2 weeks of August and except for the beaches, the tourists sites were mostly uncrowded.
