Light summer jacket for ladies

Hello:

I am planning a trip to continental Europe during end of Aug - mid Sept. For one flight, I will need to travel on Air Nostrum, which is Iberia's regional airline that uses smaller jets. This means that hand luggage restrictions are really tight and they constantly force passengers to check-in their carry-on (for free). I will bring my CPAP machine and laptop, neither of which can be checked-in. So, I will have minimal (or no) room left for my purse. Therefore, I am considering having a travel jacket with a ton of pockets that serves as my purse for this flight and for metro rides to prevent pickpocketing.

Most jackets I found either do not have enough secure pockets or are for winter. The only one I found so far are:

Pocket Travel Jacket by Koret--more colors, free return

Is this a reputable online vendor? Has anybody bought Koret clothing?

SCOTTeVEST Women's Trench Coat--no free return, but only one color

This brand is quite popular with men, but has anybody tried their women's collection? What's the quality of fabrication? Also, the Q&A on the Amazon page says it is recommended for 40-65 degrees Fahrenheit--not quite summer weather!

I want to avoid REI type jackets because I don't want to look like a hiker. I want to be able to walk into a nice restaurant for dinner without having to return to the hotel to change.

Thanks in advance!

What about the infinity scarves that can hold passport, phone and cards (sheathed a small card carrier thing)? Many leggings now also have thigh pockets that hold a phone and concealed waistband zippers. Or try Magellan's? Depending on the weather, though, if it is warm it seems like you would look suspicious in a trench coat and bulging pockets!😎

Thanks, Karen.

I didn't know about the infinity scarf and just looked it up. Well, I think it's not suitable for summer. ALso, I am worried that it causes neck pain.

About the first jacket listed above: it seems like this is the better option of the two, but many customers have posted complaints about Appleseeds.com (owned by blair.com). Has anybody purchased from them recently? The product seems fine, but I am not sure about the vendor.

Thanks for the suggestion for Magellans--their travel jackets are for winter. I also checked exOfficio, but their prices are on the higher side. Eddie Bauer and LL Bean don't offer a competitive product. So, I am still looking...

I used a Scottevest on my flight from JFK to/from Tel Aviv a couple of years ago. It was the "Molly Jacket" which I don't believe they sell any longer. It held a bunch of stuff, but it also looked like I was carrying a lot (which I was due to very strict luggage requirements). After I returned home from my trip, I noticed that one of the seams on the larger pocket was coming undone. I contacted Scottevest and they said that they would pay for repairs. I didn't wear the jacket at all while in Israel, due to high temperatures.

I HATED my ScotteVest.

I bought the woman’s jacket. It wrinkled, it caught every bit of lint. The pockets were right where my bust was (so there was collision going on. The cut was strange too - it was narrow in the hips and loose at the waist. It was cut as a smaller version of the men’s jacket, instead of a jacket for women. Worse - it put all the weight on my neck.

In short, it made me look lumpy and slovenly while also putting my neck muscles under strain and giving me a headache.

BTW, I put my explicit review and experience on their web page. ScotteVest removed it. That may be why you see so many positive reviews....

BTW how are you carrying your laptop? Can you put your phone wallet and passport in there?

Another suggestion is to take a padded laptop sleeve and slip that into a sling bag or equivalent. You could fit phone, wallet, and even a small comfort kit in the corner.

Sling Bag

Throw out options: instead of a jacket, could you get by with just a cardigan since you’re traveling during warm months? Then you could wear something like this. My husband wears a stretchy belt similar to this when he runs. It holds his phone. You could always pick up a cheaper purse at a Monoprix store or similar if it will keep you from spending a lot on airline fees.

Wouldn't recommend the SCOTTeVest, either. Mine turned out to be too cumbersome and the material didn't breathe and turned too hot quickly even in mild temperatures. Expensive purchase that no longer gets used.

Your CPAP machine counts as medical equipment. Most carriers allow you to carry medical equipment PLUS supplies as additional hand luggage without counting it against your allowance. I would check with the carrier directly, not just their web site. Key word: "Disability", even if you wouldn't think of it that way.

As to pickpockets, I had some great experiences in Rome with a Travelon anti-theft crossbody bag that had lockable zippers and zipped pockets within zipped pockets and a flap closure. In one instance, I was approached by a likely pickpocket, watched her eyes go from my face to the bag, after which she turned around mid-sentence and walked away. You still have to use caution and should probably wear a money belt under your clothes, but you can't always go fishing around in your underwear for everything :-)

For the Air Nostrum flight, a personal item is not allowed. So, I will carry a carry-on roller to contain the CPAP and laptop.

I've had good luck with Scottevest stuff and so has wife, but I will say their clothes seem to be cut for more trim, athletic folks, so its hard to size right.

I use both ScotteVest and Exofficio vests and jackets, and am very happy with them. I do use the light-weight vests, and have been very happy with them, even in summer months. The difference in fabric weights is important, so do pay attention to that detail. I have found them to be very well made and high quality. I also very much like the pocket across the back; it's good for maps, my packable raincoat, etc.
Both companies have periodic sales that make their products more affordable.

Do I look like a model from a magazine cover- obviously not. However, for me, the security of having both hands free and knowing that my wallet, glasses and phone are secure is worth the trade-off.
Safe travels!

PS
I am a woman, and I do find their sizing runs small. My husband has also found that the pants run small.

Thanks again.

While North American airlines and some international airlines allow medical equipment to be carried on-board in addition to allowed hand baggage, many European ones don't. They just don't care. Somebody asked this question in another forum and claimed that Iberia didn't let him carry his CPAP as an extra item at no cost. He then was forced to check-in his carry-on roller and carry just the CPAP on-board. I guess they are just less lenient to the sick ones!

Why just for ladies? Much of the attire worn by a women is most certainly suitable for other genders and those who identify with them.

Thanks, everybody for your replies. I did purchase the first jacket listed in my original message. It's very big. I got a Medium, but its body and sleeve lengths are more like L/XL Tall. The quality of manufacture is so-so. Yet, I didn't buy this to win fashion awards and am just using it as a wearable carry-on for small aircrafts, with extremely limited overhead bin space.
