What is the best travelers Medical insurance for Europe? We will be departing in a little over two weeks so need something fast! Thanks!
I am assuming that you mean medical travel insurance, not insurance against having to cancel a "package tour." I take month-long trips in Europe, as an independent traveler, and have always had good experience through
http://insuremytrip.com/
This is a site that lets you compare prices and coverage from many different companies. The opening page has a list on the left-hand side including the word "Quotes". click on that. If you want to get mainly medical insurance -- NOT against trip cancellation -- put "0" under trip cost and "0" on Medical limit... then fill out the dates, residence et c. I would also do a separate form for each of you.
a page will open up listing plans comparing coverage. You want to have about $10,000 or more for emergency medical care -- and then coverage in case you have to be flown back to US... Peple in their 60s can get 3 weeks coverage for just about $45 I think. U also get 24/7 "Traveler Assistance" which can be VERY useful.
Trip cancellation doesn't only pertain to package tours. Most cmpanies that have trip cancellation cover any nonrefundable costs in case of a cancelled trip -- deposits, air tickets, etc. I agree that www.insuremytrip.com is a great site for comparing policies and companies. Once you decide what you need coverage for you can select the company that has the coverages you need without things that you don't want to pay for. Be sure to look at the policies so that you know exactly what is covered, and take the policy with you on your trip in case you need the information.
This is for Medical insurance.
As Nancy says, www.insuremytrip.com allows you to compare policies and buy online. Eliminate all the coverages except travel medical, since that is what you want, and you should be able to get a high policy limit at reasonable cost (medical evacuation costs can be high). Use the search box to retrieve the frequent discussions of this subject.
Also check out Global Travel Shield which is underwritten by AMEX. They had the cheapest medical/dental evacuation insurance for us.
Don't forget to verify your present insurance doesn't already protect you. While "out of network" and subject to higher deductibles, basically my insurance protects me just as much as if I went to an out of network provider in the U.S.
Some US health plans exclude medical evacuation cost, which can be very high. An example someone gave a while back is: the cost of 6 or more airline seats if you had a full cast on your leg and had to buy the seats at the last minute (and this would be a smaller evacuation cost compared to some situations). You probably have to call your insurer or read the fine print to know whether your US health plan excludes "medical evacuation cost."
