Suggestions for towns to spend about ten days

Hubby and I just returned from a seven week trip: Netherlands. Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and London.

Our trip got interrupted in Bolzano, Italy because I was in the hospital there for four days. We then had to extend our stay another five days until I was good to travel. At that point we realized that we needed to remove Portugal and Spain and just stay put in Bolzano until it was time to go home.

It turned out to be a “blessing in disguise”. We have always talked about staying in one spot for 7-10, days, and we quickly realized Bolzano was one of those places. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, not too big, plenty of shopping and wonderful restaurants. We were a ten minute walk from the train and bus station, so day trips would be easy.

We already plan on returning to Bolzano and I am looking for suggestions for 2-3 other towns similar to this. Could be Germany, Italy, Austria. We liked Lucca. Sienna might be too large?.?

When I was in the hospital, we decided maybe this should be our last trip to Europe. I was very fortunate to be in a hospital with wonderful healthcare and we were staying in a hotel with wonderful customer service. They were such a big help to my husband. But now that we’re back home for a week, we’re already talking about “next time”.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry you were sick, and glad you are okay now. Happy for your silver lining of finding a town you really liked.

In the same vein (beautiful relaxing small tourist city with things to do, see and eat) as Bolzano:

Colmar or Freiburg, Den Bosch, Amersfoort, Ghent, Lucerne, Samur, Annecy, Bremen, Porto. Salzburg of course.

Perhaps you are interested in completing your journey to visit Portugal and Spain? Plenty of towns and smaller cities just like Bolzano in Spain alone. Off the top of my head I can recommend:

Girona
Vic
Zaragoza
Huesca
Burgos
Leon
Oviedo
Cuenca
Salamanca
Caceres‎
Jaen
Cadiz

To name a few :)

Lots of wonderful places, but 10 days in a town like Siena or Lucca would be too much.

We have a trip to Italy planned in May, visiting Umbria then Rome for a few days.
In Umbria, we stay two days in Orvieto the a week in Perugia. While in Perugia, we use it as a base to visit Assisi, Spello, Spoleto and Gubbio.

1 Sue, now that you have seen some of traditional Western Europe, maybe get off the beaten path a bit? Lots of YouTube links: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/back-doors-to-the-back-doors-of-europe

2 Because this was a thread on some of the lesser known destinations it doesn't list the larger cities, my favorite (of course):

Salzburg. Soooo much beauty in the surrounding area. Charming old town, and it doesn’t feel like a big city.

Easy day trips:
Berchtesgaden (Konigsee, salt mine & Eagle’s Nest)
Hallstatt (super cute town & salt mine)
Hallein (sommerrodelbahn & salt mine)
Werfen (fortress & ice cave)
A multitude of gorgeous lakes to explore
Munich (2 hrs by train)

Mister E - thanks for suggesting Budapest. It was on our list to visit before Covid and for whatever reason, we haven’t looked at it again. Will definitely put it back on our list.

1 Sue, do talk to TexasTravelMom as she was new to the city; while I have this unnatural affinity to the place and tend to be a bit biased (understandable for the the most beautiful city in Europe ... oops, there I go again).
2 If you go that way feel free to write and I will try and help.
3 But there are a lot of other fascinating places listed above and I am sure you will find a good match.
4 Living outside your comfort zone for a few weeks is always a good endeavor; you learn so much about the world and yourself.

I will probably have a long summary of what I saw in Budapest done in a week or so. I will message the link when I get it done. :) I thought I wouldn’t write one, but there just aren’t many trip reports and I have loved my time.
