Will be traveling next April down the Rhine to Basel. Returning to Amsterdam via Bruges after 2 days in Lucerne. I'd like to break up the train travel spending a night in one of the German city's along the route. Cologne is location for train transfer so logical, but will have seen main sites during river cruise. Any suggestions much appreciated. Cynthia
You will be traveling UP the river towards Basel - your boat will be pushing into the current the whole way.
It may well not affect you but you should be aware that April is often the peak of the spring thaw so that the river levels can rise a lot. You may find that they take you off the boat and onto buses for part of the trip.
If you don't want to spend the night in Koeln, how about Bonn or Koblenz?
Thanks for reply. Yes I know about the River level problems as I've done this trip before. Thanks for the suggestions re stops in Germany. I have lived south of Munich and visited several times, but always in the South, so I want to see a bit of a different area.
Alternatively Basel itself is chock full of very interesting attractions. We go there as often as we can.
I did think about staying in Basel. Could take day trip to Zurich and to Ballenberg Open Air Museum (I think). Ballenberg is one reason I thought to stay in Luzern as it is a nice day trip from there. I will be there the 3rd week of April, so things are open again. What have you enjoyed in Basel?
