We are landing in Frankfurt at 5:30. We would appreciate any suggestions of where to stay in Frankfurt by the airport or if we should get a car right away and drive to a smaller town. We are heading to Colmar France but would like to spend a day in Germany relaxing prior to starting our sightseeing in Colmar. Please provide any suggestions you may have.
Why not stay in Frankfurt, see the city, explore, have some great food, go to some markets, see if a fest is on during the dates you will be here, get a good nights sleep and then leave the next morning? I sure would not stay near the airport and pay double the amount of what it costs in the city, especially when Frankfurt is only 11 min. away by S-bahn.
What is your budget, when will you be arriving here and is this a family or just a couple?
From the airport, Frankfurt is in the wrong direction if your goal is Colmar.
Speyer is an attractive smallish city on the way near the Rhine with a gorgeous cathedral.
Gengenbach is closer to Colmar - it's an old walled town with cobblestones and towers, a very attractive place not far from Strasbourg.
Denise,
You might also consider Bacharach (on the Rhine and very easy to get to from Frankfurt, especially with jet lag). I'd suggest using the train, as it will be less stressful after a long flight and Bacharach is only slightly over an hour.
Good luck and happy travels!
Thank you for the suggestions - we were in Bacharach 2 years ago and loved it. We might go back. Any other suggestions of places similar to Bacharach or somewhere that would be of interest to teenage girls?
If the towns directly enroute are too large for your taste on this trip, I would suggest a slight detour to the Mosel. Beilstein or Cochem would be a relatively short drive from the Frankfurt airport and would be an easy drive to Colmar the next day. EDIT: I just saw that you have teenage girls along. I see your predicament. They would probably enjoy the historic university towns of Heidelberg and Freiberg more than the smaller towns you are seeking. Good luck!
