Suggestions for Iceland Itinerary

We are two seniors just beginning to think about and plan a trip to Iceland next June or July, possibly for ten days or two weeks. Anyone have any recommendations for tour companies vs. rental cars, etc? Or any other suggestions for us?

My husbands 80 year old mother and her friend just went on a 9 day private tour around Iceland. I have family there and my nephew is a photographer...specializing in little nooks and crannies of Iceland. We didn't want our mom to be on a tour where she was bustled around (she recently fallen and broken her pelvis last spring. It was touch and go whether she would end up going or not).
He isn't an official tour guide...but he had a good size vehicle and he knew the island. He would also know which sites would be appropriate for them at the age and condition.
If you would like me to connect you to him...I would be glad to. Their experience was truly magical and is the trip of a lifetime for them.
If you are on Facebook...find me Kim Reed Fiske. I can send you more info that way. Or email...jkfiske@gmail.com

I was on a tour with Nordic Saga (http://www.nordicsaga.com) which went around the ring road for about 10 days. It covered a lot of the high points of the country, and due to the size there were no long stretches on the bus. The stops were frequent and interesting. Our group contained everyone from younger travelers, forty-somethings with children to the recently retired and a few elderly. The majority of our group was probably in their 50s and 60s.

If you've always been the type to do things on your own, Iceland is a great country. It is very easy to navigate and the travel information is top notch. You could easily rent a car and do your own thing. However, if you'd rather sit back and let someone else do the driving, it's also a great way to see the country.
