I guess I have to chalk it up to age but I am finding the maps in tour books and even the Streetwise Map of Rome to be difficult to read (even with my glasses on.) Can anyone recommend a small travel magnifying glass? thanks.
Judith, I, too, have the same need. Do a computer search for: www.sciplus.com and go down the left side index to OPTICS. On page 3 of optics there is a classy looking folding magnifying glass. On p. 6 is another which is the model I bought four of. The grandkids need them too. The order number for the first one is: 93978. The order number for the cheap one I bought is: 92677. These are folding, but are big enough to be useful when looking at small print.
The DEUTSCHE OPTIK catalog (they have an internet website) has high quality magnifying lenses made in Germany. Most of the magnifiers have high prices, but the magnifier that pivots out of its case does not have a high price.
In my experience the little plastic magnifying sheets get scratched too easily and the optics aren't very good. You need to get something with a protective case. Check out some of the pocket magnifiers Amazon sells. I bought this one: True Utility TU34 EyeGlass Key Ring Magnifying Glass. The Bausch & Lomb Folding Pocket Magnifier, 5-20x, also looks good to me because you have different magnification options. Likewise the Donegan P-949 Magna-Pak Double Folding Pocket Magnifier, 4x, 5x, or 9x Magnification also looks worth considering.
Thank you for these great suggestions!
Judith, if you don't want to order online and wait for delivery, most good stationery stores sell them, as do Office Depot type stores and the Brookstone stores in most malls.
The Donegan Optical V-341-T is a triple folding pocket magnifier. 5X, 10X, 15X. Under $15.
