Suggest historic sights, transportation in areas around Croatia

My wife and I are N/S seniors and have enjoyed previous trips to Dubrovnik, Sprit and Havar in '06. We disembark from transatlantic cruise from USA in Venice on April 24th before returing by air from Venice or nearby via AA before 5-14-10. What do you suggest we see in historic villages, cities rather than countryside scenery and national parks ?
We have been to and loved Florence, Sienna, Tuscany Umbria Italy's hill towns and other wonderfulareas north of Venice ( Prague, Budapest,Austria etc.
Can we do it on our own ? Any tour suggestions since Rick dous not go there in April?
Thanks !

Hi Bill,

Have your wife and you been to Slovenia? We really like visiting Ljubljana and the Lake Bled area. Not sure about a tour but you could look at the possibility of doing that on your own.

Janis and Bill, I don't know what the "N/S" means, so I apologize in advance if I'm suggesting something inappropriate. I agree with the previous response and suggest Slovenia might be an interesting destination after your cruise. It's very close to Venice, and there are multiple ways you could travel there. If you're comfortable driving, that would give you a lot of flexibility. Rick Steves book will give you the highlights. Feel free to write if you have any specific questions.

If you want to go to Croatia, there's catamaran service from Venice to Porec and Rovinj on the Istrian peninsula. It only runs 2 or 3 times a week, so you'd need to see if schedules match your travel days (www.venezialines.com). Once in Croatia, you could rent a car and explore Istria, which is very difficult to do by public transportation. You could also drive to Zagreb for a couple of nights or, if you want to avoid renting a car, take a bus to Pula and then the train to Zagreb.
