Where can I find Subway maps of each European city, I'd like to get them now so i know where im going. But can't seem to find the right ones online.
For London, the website that helped me the most was the London Underground Homepage: Paste http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/Standard-Tube-map.pdf . For Paris, try: http://www.paris.org/Metro/gifs/metro.pdf . You can also drag these to your desktop, and enlarge or shrink them before printing.
It might help if you gave people a list of cities you need.
For now, Munich www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archiv/objects/download/1/schnellbahnnetz_2008.pdf and Frankfurt www.rmv.de/coremedia/generator/Bilder/0Abbildungen/PlaeneNetzplaene/PLA__Schnellbahnplan2008_3Dgr,property=image.gif
I like this all-in-one site:
www.urbanrail.net/eu/euromet.htm
Try typing in your address bar the name of the city with the corresponding url country code. For example, www.frankfurt.de or www.paris.fr or www.roma.it. Then look for a little british or american flag, which should be the English version of that website. Chances are they'll have either the maps you want or a link to the place where the maps are, such as the division/company that runs the subway in that city.
For the official map of Paris, go to www.ratp.fr and click on the British flag symbol for English. You will find a link to "metro maps".
Try to find the official maps. Urbanrail.net has a good collection of mediocre maps. Unfortunately, because of copyright issue, I guess, they can't just copy the official maps, which are much better. Their own maps are sketchy and incomplete. But, they do have a nice write-up on each system.
For the official map of Rome, go to www.metroroma.it.
thanks, would it also be good to have some kind of gps system or handheld map system?
If you have a PDA, smartphone or handheld GPS system you can use the Tube 2 software:
www.visualit.co.uk
Christy: A handheld GPS will help you above ground (of course it won't work in a subway because it has to be able to communicate with the satellites).
As a quick pointer, you might want to remember - that at least in the UK - a subway is something different from an underground/commuter train. A subway in UK/Lodon terms is an pedestrian tunnel under a road. So make sure not to automatically follow signs for 'subway' :o)
Kate
I always search google for subway maps of major cities. You will find useful maps of all large European cities. Just enter the city name and "subway".
It is easy to print them and take with you.
If you search on Google for a transit map of a German city, use "Verkehrsverbund" and the city name. For instance, Verkehrsverbund Munich will get you www.mvv-muenchen.de, which is the official site of the Munich transit authority. The site will probably have German pages and you can find the official map.
Thanks Kate! thats a really good pointer!
