My son will be studying in Berlin from August to December and maybe extending that. I am trying to help him with clothing that will work for summer and winter. And shoes? Any recommendations for a 20 year old?
As a female that's approximately the same age as your son, I would say (generally):
Dark colors
Avoid jeans
Slightly more formal - think business casual
Very warm coat - Berlin will receive snow as early as November and is always cold.
Wool and layers will be important for the winter days.
Pack layers, think light button up/oxford shirts that can carry him from fall, into winter can be paired with a v-neck or crewneck sweater. Also scarfs are insanely popular in Europe, even for guys, so advise him to pick or better yet buy some when over there. I'd bring jeans, you can dress them up or down. Perhaps no shorts...
I have posted this response so many times I should make a copy of it. Use the search function. Our son spent a semester in Madrid. The advice we received from our study abroad office was to take min clothing -- no more than week or so -- and very basic. The students will want to buy local clothing to match their peer group. That is what happened. When we visited during the mid-semester break, we brought home all of his Am clothes including shoes. That may be a more expensive option but it was easier because we did not have a lot of luggage going over.
I echo what Frank suggested. Berlin will offer many choices for funky and affordable clothing students like.
Thanks so much for your responses.
