Student ID for discounts? US id's?

I know that youth's get a discount (26 and under) but I am a student and 27 with a student ID. Do college ID's work if from US or are they only valid for lets say a English College in the UK or France college in France? How does that work? Can the student ID work for some travel and also tours as well, if it works?

Thanks!

When I lived in Austria during college I had an International Student ID card, as well as my home university ID. I usually kept my "real" one tucked away and used the ISIC instead, so I don't know if your home university card would be OK on its own.

To my knowledge, a college ID won't help you out much or at all - you'll need to get an International Student ID Card (I know www.sta.com has them available for $22 + $3 shipping). That discount can save you a lot on travel and accomodations as well as sights. I don't think a standard US University ID will do anything for you in Europe for getting discounts.

I personally don't think paying $25 for the other student card is worth it. My US school ID has gotten me plenty of discounts over the last year.

The policy varies from site to site so you won't get a flat out answer that covers every place you are going. Some places specify EU student and some don't. Some don't even bother asking to see the ID after you tell them you are a student. So yeah, it varies.

Here is a related thread from earlier this year.

Hi, David. I'd get the ISIC card, it's worth it for the discounts, being widely recognized, and other benefits (do they still offer some free trip insurance?)

When I was 28, I had gone back to college, and had taken my college ID and ISIC card to Europe for 3 months. Many places would not accept my college ID card, as it did not have a date on it, so the ISIC card came in handy, and helped save some money.

Hi,

I am a returning (non-stop according to my hubby) student. I took my regular college ID to Edinburgh and rec'd discounts on day tours, entry to Roslyn Chapel, and the Mary Kings Close tour.

If it is a current school year ID, definitely take it and present it to ask for a discount. Cheers.

Yep, when I was in grad school, I took my student ID to Germany and Ireland, and was able to get discounts to most sights. It was usually just a euro or 2 off of the regular price, but it adds up. Don't be shy about asking for the discount.
