Streetwise maps back in print?

In 2016 when I shopped for a Streetwise map of Vienna for an upcoming trip, I was shocked to see it listed for over $60 on Amazon. Other maps were similarly priced. I went online and learned the company was giving up. Rick sold out his inventory and does not carry them any more. They slowly disappeared from our local bookstores.

So imagine my surprise when I looked on Amazon for an Amsterdam map and found a Streetwise map for $6.99 with Amazon Prime. Googling once again, I learned that Streetwise was recently bought by Michelin North America. My shiny new Amsterdam map is dated November 2017 and says it was Printed in Canada by Michelin USA.

Apparently they have not done many cities yet, as Copenhagen is over $100 on Amazon! Indeed Amsterdam is the only one I found at regular retail when browsing on Amazon.

As for Vienna, I was able to obtain one by trading one or two of my lightly used Streetwise maps with another Forum member.

Whaaat?? That is GREAT news! I love those maps. Just the right size for your purse and shows most of the good parts of various city centers. I liked that they were laminated so they were rain/coffee/wine resistant and you could write and erase on them.

This is wonderful news.

Maybe the buyer for Rick's store will start stocking them as well.

I love the Streetwise maps too. Lola, are they the same quality as before?

The new one is exactly the same as my older ones. Same format, same fonts, same substance. I would not have known the difference had I not investigated. And it still lists the same website (www.streetwisemaps.com), although the physical, address is given as Michelin Travel and Leisure in Greenville, SC instead of Streetwise in Sarasota, Florida.

The website does not appear to be functioning, however.

Thanks for the post. The Munich map will be released Feb 15 on Amazon and is only $5.20 with Prime shipping--perfect timing for our spring break trip!

Thanks for the tip! I love those maps too, have several and will keep an eye out for the Naples, Italy addition. They work as very sturdy fans too when you need a nice cooling breeze!

Those are great maps. But honestly, the most useful maps that I have ever had are the ones offered by our hotels for free.

Good detective work and reporting, Lola! This will make so many of us happy!

My preferred maps, this is indeed good news! I have a nice collection of them, always keep just in case of a return--Vienna and Budapest have really gotten good use.

Thanks, Lola! Very good news indeed. I just ordered Paris and Edinburgh for my spring and fall trips from Amazon. Love those maps, although I do have to agree with traylaparks.....even while I carry a Streetwise map, a hotel free handout (with the location on my hotel prominently marked!) is always in my pocket!

Be still my heart! What great news! I'll check Amazon to see what they have for my spring trip, and maybe ask my local Barnes & Noble about stocking them too. Sorry to lose such a customer-friendly company in 2016 but glad to hear someone else will be putting out the maps.

I do like the free hotel maps for detail on the local area,, but sometimes they use European map conventions that take practice to decipher.

I also like to carry a Pop-Up map in my purse (a small 5x5 cross body purse), and I can mark them up with a pen (circle a particular destination, etc.).

But the Streetwise maps are my go-to general purpose maps for cities. There is something about the print, the font (sans-serif), the high contrast, and the sharp detail that makes them easy on the eyes.

So can we start a list of what is available now? Amsterdam, Paris, and ???

What it is about Streetwise that make its maps better or more preferred than other foldable brands? Are the maps in depth enough that they include every street?

Lola, City map of London is available now and I preordered Edinburgh-those and Paris (also available) are the only ones I wanted for now. I think (??) there were several others available on Amazon.

"Are the maps in depth enough that they include every street?"

No, they do not include every street but, for instance in Paris they include a goodly number of the smaller pedestrian streets/walkways. I'm thinking specifically of the St Germain area and the Covered Passages are shown altho you have to know what you are looking for to detect the blue lines which denote a pedestrian zone.

The thing that annoys me about some hotel maps and some other maps are that they sometimes don't have an exact top view, it's like you are peering down from the side, an oblique view?. I can't think of a way to describe this except that the official Louvre map is like this. I want a direct overhead view. I also don't like the tourist maps that have large icons of stores or museums or other sights that obscure other streets.

Wow, I am a cranky girl today!

Now, the question is...do we stockpile these maps in case they go out of print again? Do I need to get enough to last me the next 10 or 12 years which may effectively be the time I have left to do European travel?

Ohhhh, Andi, thanks for cueing me on Edinburgh! I'll go get that one!

The Streetwise maps are on some sort of coated or plasticized stock that looks as if it will stand up to rain. There are other similarly sturdy maps sold in large bookstores for those who can't wait for the resurrection of the full Streetwise catalog. I noticed that one brand has the very-unattractive-to-me practice of placing small pictures of key building on its maps, so don't buy online unless you know what you're getting.

I liked Streetwise because they fit easily into a hip pocket, stand up to a lot of use including getting wet, are easy to read yet have a lot of detail for the parts of the city they cover (usually adequate for tourism), don't have those annoying pictures or other superfluous stuff, and show subway and tram routes on the map itself as well as, often, in a dedicated inset.

We found an error on their Athens map, I think a nonexistent connection between Metro lines at one station, and I wrote them about it. They apologized, promised to fix it (but disappeared before they could), and sent me a map of my next destination, plus some restaurant recommendations from the company official who had been there. I was impressed.

EDIT: Googling Streetwise Maps yields links to various places they're sold, including Barnes & Noble, and shows they cover at least a dozen cities in US, Canada, Europe, and elsewhere, at prices in the $5-6 range. Great!

"What is it about Streetwise that makes them better than other foldable maps?"

I mentioned the readability above, and I believe Dick did too. The print is very sharp and clear, even when very small.

They are sturdy and waterproof, and can be folded and unfolded endlessly without fraying or tearing.

And the fold itself is a simple accordion fold, making them easy to unfold and then put back into folded form.

The downside is they have a fairly linear shape, about 24" L to R, but only 8.5" top to bottom. This means in many cases they display a wide "slice" of the city, sometimes one on each side of the map. But even with the two maps, the London one does not include much south of the river ( and part of that is covered by the Tube map).

If you are not familiar with Marco Polo maps, they are great. Laminated, finely detailed, and very helpful. Although I love Google Maps, sometimes the little LCD screen on the smartphone is just not big enough when you are wanting to survey a city or plan a trek from point A to point B.
