Hi everyone: We are still trying to hash out the big adventure and are toying with the idea of heading south from Strasbourg to Chamonix or .... should we go rogue and do something entirely different? We thought it would be lots of fun to ski in the Alps but we are not quite sold. So from Strasbourg do we head south and be Alpine ski bunnies? Or head east and see some of the german heritage? Or go to Switzerland and open a secret bank account? Or fly from France to our final country destination, Italy, and see something we hadn't planned on seeing? We would love some input on pros and cons of various potential routes. There are 2 of us, it will be early January and we are talking about 2.5-3 days. Thanks in advance for your input!
Well I guess I'll respond first :) The reason we are reconsidering our Chamonix skiventure is because we live in Montana and can ski a lot here should we choose. Granted, it isn't the infamous Alps, but the Rockies are ok too. We're not really sure how far into Germany we could get before we go to Venice and were looking for some seasoned veterans' advice, especially since we are certainly going during off-season. My husband isn't too keen on flying while in Europe but if we hear otherwise we could persuade him. I've also read/seen some great things on Switzerland too. Too many choices!
I sort of did the reverse a few years ago in March. Drove from Verona to Strasbourg with an overnight in Luzern. Beautiful drive, but the tunnels can be a bit much for claustrophobics. No skiing and the roads were fine, but your mileage may vary travelling in January. I happen to love Luzern (been there several times) and was showing around friends who hadn't. Incidentally, I highly recommend a half-day visit to Brescia (between Milan and Verona) if you have the time while in Italy. It is a little off the tourist path, but has nice castle/museum and some gorgeous scenery on the hillside to the east of the castle. Classic Tuscan style even though it isn't Tuscany.
Nancy~ Thank you for your input. We looked at some pictures of Luzern and it seems incredible. Now we just have to consider travelling between Strasbourg -> Luzern -> Venice.
You have to consider the weather. Son was there February two years ago and did almost what you are doing and not a problem. Ten years before that we did something similar and hit major snow storm. Driving both trips. Of course the snow could snarl air travel as well. Why does husband not want to fly inter country in Europe. To me is as safe as flying between states but granted on small commuter jets like we have here.
