storing pictures, videos on iPad

I do not understand the technical language re: computers (size, speed, etc.) so ... I had an iPad (not iPad2). ($800?) ... I want to download photos, pictures, etc., on there (I'll get the needed accessory to download from camera).... I have a Canon (nothing expensive) - I'll be in the UK and France for 3 weeks ... my first time, so probably will be taking lots of pictures, videos, etc. In plain English, will the iPad have enough space for 3 weeks of pictures, etc., or should I get a netbook?

There are 3 sizes of iPad storage. 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Prices vary from $499, $599, $699 for Wifi versions and $629, $729, $829 for the 3G and Wifi version. If you don't already have lots of data that has filled up you iPad you can copy your photos using apple's ipad camera connection kit $29 the kit consists of 2 little devices, one lets you plug in a USB reader or cable, the other is an SD card reader. You can check how much space is available on your iPad in the settings about this ipad section. It depends how many pictures you take but if if you have a larger iPad with free space you should be able to copy hundreds or thousand of photos if not more.

THANK YOU ALL! I like the idea of taking a bunch of pictures, videos and downloading them to see how the capacity changes. Also, more memory in another card for the camera. I read something here of taking the memory card to some place where they can make a CD of it. I'm also going to upload as much as I can to FB. I have At&T but its easy to turn it off and use wi-fi. Thank you!

But can't you just download them via USB to flash drives? Edit: But can't you just download them from the iPad via USB to flash drives?

AND, if you have a Facebook page, you can post some of your photos and videos to share with your friends and family at home. If yours is only wi-fi, that should work, as long as you can find wi-fi in your hotel or B&B. Practice before you leave, so you know you can do it. So much fun to post photos on the go for your friends at home to see. If you have 3G on the Ipad, make sure your settings are such that you won't get charged for email, etc while overseas. you can call AT&T and talk to an Apple expert to help you adjust the setting. This is ONLY if you have the 3G ipad, Wi-fi only won't be an issue. If your iPad was $800, you have larger capacity. Seems to me that you have room for thousands of photos. Keep in mind you can delete any that you don't like to create more space. I just bought an iPad2 (should be delivered today!!) just for my travels and for work. They are amazing devises.. Enjoy, but practice here so you can ask questions and make sure you know how to do what you want to do when traveling.

RAW files and video can take up a lot of space, but you can store a lot of JPEGs if that is mostly what you'll be shooting. As Lisa mentioned, you can check your free space on the iPad. My suggestion is to do a day or two of test shooting with your camera, uploading the photos and video to the iPad with the camera connection kit and see how much space you burn up, then multiply that for the number of days you'll be gone to get a better idea of the space you'll use. You'll probably still want to have extra SDHC cards for your camera.

Well, Lee, she can - but that's not a fun as dowloading to a tablet. You have a Netbook..... do you download to the Netbook as you go, or store them on flash drives for download later?

I download to my netbook, but it has almost 200 GB of storage, so I don't have to worry about storage space, but if I did, I would just offload the pictures to flash drives or flash cards to free up space.

To be safe with your precious travel photos you should have at least 2 copies. Memory cards are so cheap now. Try not to erase them until you are home safe and have them on another device at home.

I agree with Lisa; take enough memory cards to hold all your photos and only download them to your iPad as a form of back-up and/or means of downloading them to the net. A typical 10-12mb camera will take 1000 or so photos (in jpeg) to fill a 4gb card. It shouldn't be hard to leave that much space on your iPad, especially if you take a few minutes to eliminate the poor/blurry/redundant photos.

I just came back from a trip to Africa and downloaded over 1300 pictures to my iPad. I still had more room left over than I could imagine. I also have magazines, books, movies, TV shows, music and games on it. It is 64 gigs. it was a lifesaver for the 40 hours of travel to get there and back. I had a netbook previously and haven't touched it since I got the iPad. my friend that I traveled with had a netbook and he bought an iPad last week as he was envious of it throughout our trip.
