Stockholm vs Copenhagen

I will be spending a week in July 2024 in either Stockholm or Copenhagen. I'm leaning towards Stockholm, but if anyone has been to either (or both) and has recommendations, I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I've been to both. Copenhagen briefly each of 2 times. Stockholm once for a little longer than the total time in Copenhagen. Both have a lot to recommend them and you couldn't go wrong with either, but I much prefer Stockholm. I find the city, its setting and what you can see and do there more interesting.

There are links to the RS info on each right here on this website.

Copenhagen: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/denmark/copenhagen. On the RS Scandinavia tour, I skipped the famous options listed and instead chose to go to the Design Museum Denmark. Their website is a little wonky and they have some apologies about that. You may need to select English for language multiple times.

It was a long walk from where the bus dropped us off, but I was able to get there, spend lots of time and get back before it left. It was 2018 and I was able to see this chair tunnel along with just about everything else on display there.

Stockholm: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/sweden/stockholm. I saw and enjoyed almost all the places we experienced on the Scandinavia tour, but I was glad I arrived a few days early so I could do a couple of things not on the Stockholm itinerary or listed at the link above.

The first was the Moderna Museet. I am a big fan of the art of the 20th century to the present. This is an excellent museum for that. I went there specifically to see the Robert Rauschenberg piece called Monogram, but I was able to see everything there in a reasonable amount of time.

The other thing I did was to take a boat tour under the bridges through a lock. It was this Under the Bridges one. It was well worth the money and time. Having never gone through a lock it was fascinating to see all the kinds of watercraft around us and how far down and up we had to go.

During some free tour time I visited Storkyrkan, aka the Great Church or Stockholm Cathedral. Since I was there it's been significantly renovated. There's lots of information about that accessible from the history I linked. I went specifically to see the medieval oak St. George and the Dragon, but as usual, enjoyed the rest of the interior of this church.

I have been to both but without any criteria of you I cannot recommend one prior to the other.

I am with Mark.

They are both fantastic and we don't know enough about you and what interests you to make any meaningful recommendation.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with either !

It sort of depends on what you're looking for as others have mentioned. Both are great, and if you have a week you can visit both if you like.

We have been to both cities, Stockholm once, Copenhagen three times.

Both are great cities.
For Stockholm, we were wowed by the Vasa Museum. We missed going to the ABBA museum.
Copenhagen and the nearby Viking Museum was great. i think that I would give the edge to that city.

Since others have asked, my interests are centered around museums (indoor and outdoor), walking/biking tours around the city, food, and experiences on the water. Thanks again!

Just goes to show that everyone is different. We once had a house exchange in Copenhagen for 5 weeks. During that time we did a road trip to Sweden. I found that country, includingStockholm, to be pleasant; but I wouldn’t ever want to return.
Denmark, otoh, was endlessly interesting and enjoyable for us. There are a number of very good day trips and short get-aways from Copenhagen well worth your time.

I prefer Copenhagen out of those two cities.

Stockholm is having some social problems with some foreign aliens not simulating into their society.

I've spent 2-1/2 weeks in Stockholm since July 2022, including 5 days in June of this year. I observed no immigration-related problems. Not saying there are none, but there was nothing noticeable to me as a tourist. Stockholm is a lovely city.

Agree to Badger: you will be happy in both cities with your preferences.

Have a look into the main sights and museums of both cities - something will smile at you more than others.

Not really anything you need to care about.
