My husband and I are looking for the best way to get from Stockholm to Venice. I was thinking of flying to Milan and taking a train from there. Any advice on how to do this? Any better suggestions? We'll arrive in Stockholm Tuesday evening, March 3, and were hoping to arrive in Venice on Thursday.
robin,
you can try using skyscanner.com link here. skyscanner. that way you can choose when and what airports and of course $$$.
here is another one. kayak.com.
there are other options, but I'm sticking my neck out by thinking you dont want to take the scenic route.
happy trails.
Thanks, Ray. We missed the window on the cheap flight on Norwegian, so it's good to start looking on all these other sites. I guess I have to start doing my homework on which airports and train stations. I'd love to do a scenic route, and could tweak my dates for something memorable.
Your choice is Norwegian Air Shuttle or Scandanavian Airlines at the present time. That's about it for now.

i was looking forward to going to Venice next year, but i found it difficult to get to/from it when i wanted so I'm leaving it out on this trip.
just a note. I was browsing through RS Italy book for my trip. But when you start looking for other flights, look at flying into other places around Venice. from RS book, it says a train from Milan to Venice is about a 2~3 hour ride, Florence is about a 1.75 h ride and Genoa is about a 1.5~2 h ride. Just something to think about. I was looking at your flights and it appears that there are no non-stop/direct flights, but it maybe a wash if you consider taking train vs sitting in an airport.
good luck and happy trails.
Thanks for the responses. I think we're going to go with the SAS flight to Milan and the train into Venice. We'll save the scenic train through the alps for another trip.
The Le Frecce train from Milan to Venice takes 2.75 hours and is very comfortable. Buy your tickets well in advance on trenitalia. com and you may find a Super Economy fare, generally €19. Note that these are non-refundable ( like airline tickets).
You could also check the new train service italo. Very nice red trains which get good reviews. They serve only a few cities, but Milan and Venice are among them.
Edit: Italotreno does serve both Milan and Venice! but it does not connect them. So Trenitalia is your train.
And don't worry about flying into Milan and taking a train from there. I would much rather arrive in Venice by train than airplane, in spite of the usual "Venice should be approached from the sea" advice ( from John Ruskin?)
You walk out of the train station and you are right there, with the Grand Canal right in front of you. It is a beautiful sight.
We are returning to Venice next October and I intentionally did not book our flight into Venice. We will fly to Zurich and enjoy a ride on the Bernina Express, then arrive in Venice by train.
Yes, Lola, I arrived by train to Venice 30(!) years ago and have never gotten over the sight of walking out of the train station and
seeing that sight . When you make train reservations in advance, do you have to make it for a certain time, like the 11:15 train, or is it good for any of the trains on that route? We won't be sure about how much time it takes from the airport, customs, etc. Thanks for all the train tips. And enjoy the Bernina Express, it looks beautiful.
