Still haven't received a speeding ticket from France

Hello all,

My family spent some time in France last summer, part of that time traveling in a rental car driven by my husband. Shortly after we returned home, we were charged a fee by Hertz, which turned out to be an admin fee for giving our information to the French police for a speeding infraction. It's now about eight months since the infraction would have occurred, but my husband still hasn't received a ticket. If he was speeding, he wants to pay the ticket, but how long can we expect to be in limbo? I've read that it can take several months to get a ticket, but when do I stop watching the mail? Thanks.

Never having got one, I am curious as to what kind of paper work he received. Was there an option to pay online? Court date? Was it a robocam?

That's the thing-- we've not received ANY sort of paperwork, etc. The only reason we even know there SHOULD be a ticket is that there was an odd charge (something like $47) on my credit card that I was told by Hertz was their admin fee for handing over our info, and that we should expect to receive a speeding ticket from French police. My worrying side wonders if we never receive a ticket that it went missing, and next time we go to France my husband won't be allowed in because it's not paid... ;o)

Sometimes it can take a year. A more likely explanation is that the French authorities realize it was a foreign visitor and decided not to peruse it. Remember, locals also rent cars.

Still waiting for my fine to come in the mail for a speeding ticket in Germany last July. No doubt it will come.

This gives you time to add to your 'Oopsie Fund' cookie jar.

I hope the fine isn't too bad (fingers crossed).

Sorry to hear we're in the same boat, Bob.

Thanks Eileen-- he just didn't slow down in time for a speed change sign, so yeah, fingers crossed.

Still waiting for my fine from not understanding the toll road payment system in Norway... and that was almost 18 months ago.

With the fluctuating dollar-vs.-Euro exchange rate, if and when you receive a ticket perhaps you'll get a price break compared to paying it on the spot. Of course, it might wind up costing more if the dollar slides further compared to where it was at the time of the infraction. As far as the concern if a ticket was issued but never received, thus never paid, the French police probably wouldn't prevent your husband from entering the country again, but they might not let him leave ;-) Best of luck!

We were in France in late November, and my husband got a speeding ticket in the mail in January. It must have been the photo kind because we were never stopped, never even saw a policeman on the highway the whole trip, and the rental car agency never contacted us. The paperwork is mostly in French, but we could figure it out, and there was a web address where we could go and type in the ticket number and a credit card number and that took care of it. I think it was about $67. I will warn you that they will ticket you for a very small infraction...according to the ticket, we were going 2 km over the speed limit.
It is possible that you did not realize that you had gotten a ticket in the mail. The envelope sort of looked like junk mail.

Imagine the revenue that would be generated if everyone who tailgated in France was issued a fine!

And is every speedometer on every Renault, Peugeot, and Citroen (and BMW, Chevy, Toyota, etc.) accurate to within 2 km (1.3 miles) per hour? The deck seems stacked against drivers.

Well if you ever get a ticket it Switzerland, you should be aware that many fines are proportionate to your income... so a ticket to a rich person is just as painful as to a poor person....
