What was the best way to stay connected with your family/kids while you were away?
Email. You can write it at your leisure and they can read it hours later when they are awake and have time to get to it. Much easier than trying to arrange a time to be at a computer at the same time as home (or to pay for the Skype-phone connection).
Thanks
I only phone once a week or so,, 'I just get a phone card from the Tabac,, I think they are about 7 euros,, seems to last me 2-3 weeks .
Email from my iPad with photos and text to family, kids and friends. We also made a couple of Skype calls to our kids as well. Used Skpe credit and called their home phones, it only costs a few cents a minute. We had wifi at all of our hotels which made it easy.
I have ATT, so my cell phone works in Europe. I text and make a few short phone calls while I am there. The $15 or so I add to my bill for the two weeks in Europe is well worth it for keeping in touch. For me, and the length of my trips, this is much easier than bringing my computer along or using one there.
We have a rule...you'd better either be dead or dying before you contact us. Seriously, the message is, really, "can this wait?" If it can wait it should, if not a international cell phone call. I have a VERY elderly mother so yes, I do need to stay connected. In ten year's I've been called once. Going on vacation is about being unconnected.
For me, email is perfect. If I'm going to be gone for more than a week I'd call.
