I am trying to decide where to book a place to stay in Munich in May. My husband has a bad knee and cannot stay on his feet without a rest for too long, so I thought of staying in the city...but it is not very economical, just the idea of stepping out and not having to walk too much is tempting. We are renting a car too. Since I live by Boston I know that driving in big cities is not the best idea going. I don't know how bad M is for parking and traffic but I assume it is time consuming... Is it feasible to stay outside of M and drive in town, or grab a quick bus/ U-ban and get there quickly(no long waits for buses) Again my concern is getting back to the hotel in a quick manner if his leg cannot take it for awhile. And is it cheaper to stay on the fringes of the city as opposed to being more "downtown".?

There are plenty of reasonable hotels opposite the Metro /rail station. Try Hotel Ludwig. a few blocks from tha main attractions, such as the Hofbrauhouse (sic). I would not drive when the metro is very easy to navigate. Purchase a few guide books. Look at their map to determine locations.
