Start an Iceland forum!

Just returned from 4 great days in Iceland and was blown away by the numbers of Americans and Canadians who were there on holiday. If Montenegro can have a forum, it is certainly time for Iceland.

Totally agree. We were just there and there were loads of Americans and Canadians visiting. If Iceland is not on your bucket list, it should be. It is an amazing country. And the people are the friendliest, most welcoming I've ever met.

It would be nice to have a UK Forum, too, for the few months left we have as a United Kingdom....

This has been brought up before, and for some reason, Rick seems to have something against covering Iceland. He did a podcast/radio show on it a couple of years ago, but I believe it was stated either there or on this forum that he does not intend to go to Iceland. I have no idea why he seems to object to it so much, considering it's such a popular European tourism destination these days...and frankly, there are only so many shows you can do about the same "undiscovered" corners of France/Italy/Germany...

Regardless of the show though, I think an Iceland forum would be a great addition, considering the number of posts made about various Iceland-related questions! There is clearly a lot of interest in it :)

We definitely need an Iceland forum. This is my next bucket list trip and would like to hear from others their experiences. I learn so much on these forums!

I tried to get one set up too. The won't do it because they don't offer a tour there and they don't have a guidebook for it.

Try visiting Fodors or the Trip Advisor forums for Iceland. Lots of valuable information there.

I have long wanted an Iceland forum because the questions about Iceland are either posted here in "General Europe" where they may not be seen because of the number of threads going on at one time or posted in "Beyond Europe" where they may not be seen because it is an underutilized forum compared to some others.

One thing I've never understood is why Rick who has traveled to Europe every year for decades never went to Iceland until the summer of 2013. In his Warming Up to Iceland article, he states "While I won’t be writing a guidebook to Iceland — and we won’t be incorporating Iceland into our tour program — I had a great visit. Whether or not you can pronounce any names on the map, Iceland is an easy and rewarding place for travelers." I can understand not having a tour because it Iceland is already well covered by the local tour companies and an RS tour really wouldn't be that different. However, I have never understood why he never wrote a guide and is not planning to write one. He also said in that same article that he only had a couple days in the country, which again is extremely surprising. You need at least a week+ to really see the country, and even then you've only scratched the surface.

I asked this same question a while ago about the lack of an Iceland forum, and someone said that Iceland was "too easy" to travel so there wasn't a need for an RS guidebook (or even chapter/section in a more general Nordic book). It struck me as very strange because of the amount of Viking culture and history that you'd miss if you didn't have a guide. It doesn't take much effort to find beautiful scenery in the country, but if it had not been for our guide, I would have totally missed the cultural aspects of the country -- the sagas, the Yule Lads, the trolls, the significance of the Icelandic horse, and myriad other little bits of culture that you don't see when you're at the top of a waterfall or on a glacier. I would have thought that those things alone would have prompted him to spend more time there as he does seem to like cultural locations in Europe. Perhaps Reykjavik and Iceland is too small and sleepy for his tastes. Or perhaps he doesn't consider Iceland a part of Europe because you have to fly to get there. Whatever the case, he's never been interested in the country and that doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. And as long as he's not interested, there won't be a forum for it.

To add to Jo's suggestions, I found the Lonely Planet guidebook on Iceland very helpful.
