Spring break in Budapest

My husband, 17 year old and I are going to visit my son during his study abroad in Budapest. We have ten days 4/3-4/13 2020. Thinking of starting in Lisbon since there is a nonstop there and then going on after a few days.
So how many days do we need for Budapest? And how many in Lisbon or some other nonstop from DC? Well maybe not to Lisbon. I can't find the price again. Zurich has a non stop....

Will you have to go back to your point of entry to fly home? Or will you be doing an 'open-jaw' flight into one place and home from Budapest? Just wondering how many days you'll actually have for each city.

I am thinking four nights in Budapest . We don't have to fly back the same way. Seems like most flights to Budapest that are reasonable have long layovers but not long enough to see the area. We covered Amsterdam and the area a few years ago. My husband says Heathrow is very far from London so isn't keen on spending time there

Why not look at something closer to Budapest rather than Lisbon?

I suggest 4 nights in Budapest, also consider Vienna and/or Prague.

Impossible to provide much advice about air routes without knowing your departure airport. matrix.itasoftware.com is my pick for research (not purchase). www.skyscanner.com good for flights within Europe. www.seat61.com knows how to move around by train. You are right that a multi-city route is efficient for trans-Atlantic itineraries but be sure to use a multi-destination search function.

For a start, look at the wiki page for IAD which lists all the destinations/airlines from there (they should all be non-stop flights). Note that some may not be daily, some are seasonal and wiki is not 100% accurate. To match with Budapest, look at the wiki page for that airport, and see what cities they have in common.

Without flying to Budapest, Vienna is a natural - it's a reasonable train ride (just over 2.5 hours) to Budapest and well worth seeing. I'd allow 3 full days (4nights) in Budapest at a minimum. More is always better there. Great food, great wines, great sights.

Okay so we are flying in and out of Vienna VIE. We will stay in Vienna 3-4 days then train to Budapest. My question is; we have a 1:10 flight on 4/13. Do the trains from Budapest have a stop at the airport or is it just via bus? Is the bus reliable?
