Spontaneous trip to someplace warm in April - seeking bargain flights

Hello!
I'd like to plan a somewhat spontaneous trip to someplace warm in Europe in April. Icelandair has a deal that ends today 1/21/25 - which I'm exploring - but there are long layovers involved to get the best flights. So, we're not limiting our air travel to that airline, and are widening our search. We had good luck flying Icelandair last fall to get to Zurich - prices were fantastic vs. Delta.

We're considering Nice, or Provence, or Lisbon, or even Paris...2.5 weeks or so overall, and we typically prefer to stay in smaller towns and travel by public transportation. If we chose Paris, we'd likely do several day trips out of the city as well as enjoying Paris. (And Paris would be our best bet for a direct flight, we think...)

Any ideas you expert travelers can share would be welcome! Thanks!

Try Skyscanner and search for "everywhere" as your destination, then look at the lowest price destination and click through to see what you can find. Remember that flying or taking the train within Europe is usually going to be much less expensive than a connecting flight from the US. E.g., fly into Paris and take the train to Nice. I would also check TAP, the Portuguese airline, which I understand has some low fares.

Paris temp is 60ish degrees. Some rain. Just wear a stylish raincoat. It's easy to do day trips by train. Versailles, Chartres can be alternate places to stay. You can take the train to Provence and visit Avignon, Arles, Aix, Marseilles, Chateau D'If and Nice, plus Monaco if you have time. Fly into Paris, Fly out of Nice.

Wow, thanks for the speedy replies so far!

Any time in April is okay with me…just need to be home around May 1 or so.

I haven’t tried Skyscanner before…thanks for that suggestion. I did look at TAP, but didn’t see any dramatic deals. We’re weighing convenience of direct flights over the cheaper rates with multiple and longer layovers.

Thanks!

I never mind one layover, but for a week trip, I would try hardest to have a direct flight--lose less time in transit, and avoid likelihood of complication for a delay, etc.

Easter is the 20th of April this year, traditionally a very busy time for travel

Nigel, I did notice that, too - our plans are very flexible, and I think we might end up arriving before and leaving after Easter! The prices didn't seem outrageous, as they are for trying to get to Florida near Easter, for example.

We're really just trying to pick a good time to go, and for once aren't allowing a long span of time from planning to actually traveling. We'll see how it goes! :-D

Hoping for decent weather - it's actually pretty nice in MI in April, but we've never been to Europe in April, so hoping for warmth if we stay in the south of France or possibly Portugal.

If you fly to the UK you can get some very nice deals on all inclusive packages to the Canary's/Tenerife.

I would use Google Flights. Your departure airport to Europe, 1 stop, one way, $400 (or whatever you want) max price then check each day of the week you want to travel. When you find one you like, you search that one round trip and check the date matrix for the cheapest departure and return dates.

Pick another and repeat.
