We are from the US and are planning a trip next spring to Germany and Croatia. We will rent a car in Mainz and drive the entire trip, plus stay with German friends for a while. So far all of the car rental companies have informed me that, if I rent the car in Germany, they will not permit me to take it into Bosnia for the very short distance required to drive from Split to Dubrovnik. This would leave the ferry as an only option, but it is expensive. Does anyone know an alternative? (This restriction does not apply from the same companies if I rent the car in Croatia or Bosnia, but I need to rent and return in Germany). Also, what is the earliest in the spring season (April/May??) that coastal Croatia opens its hotels and other amenities, and when the weather is somewhat warm? Thank you.
i can't answer but have to tell you the scenery is gorgeous.
An easy, and very attractive alternative would be to take the ferry around that small section of Bosnia, although when I drove it a few years ago no one paid any attention to me. The islands are beautiful. You don't mention if you are planning this as a one way trip but before you get to far in your planning you should check of the cost of renting a car in Germany and dropping it in Croatia.
Thanks. It will be round trip. I have looked at the ferry, and it may be our only option. However, for RT two people and car it is somewhere between Euro 160 - 200, and it supposedly takes about 3 hours longer each way than driving, plus whatever time we would have to wait for a sailing. I don't want to chance driving if the German rules prohibit it. In the unlikely event of an accident I would then have no insurance, for I would be operating the vehicle out of the contract terms.
