Spirits from Duty Free In Frankfurt

Okay, this happened to me last December coming home.

I bought a small bottle of Asbach along with some other things and the cashier placed it in a plastic bag and sealed it.

So then I went through security and they weren't going to let me take it with me. (something about the volume of it?).

So why sell stuff in Duty-Free if you can't take it on the plane?

They DID let me take it, but the lady acted like she was doing me a favor.....

Perhaps they thought you were going to place it in checked baggage? We haven't been able to take containers with more than 3 oz (100ml) of fluids through security since 2003. You can usually find the same stuff in the duty free shops on the other side of security. For those airports without duty free on the "far side" (pretty rare now), they will deliver to your gate.

Of COURSE! Dummy me! But still, Norm.... at that stage I've only GOT my carry-on with me..... I checked my luggage long before then.....

This is a BIG issue with people connecting in Atlanta and probably other airports.

If you buy duty free PAST the security checkpoint in Europe you must put it in your checked luggage in Atlanta EVEN IF Atlanta is your destination.

The way we are set up after you claim your luggaage and clear customs you have to go back into the "sterile" part of the airport.

The airlines attempt to tell you, the TSA of course is NO help. (I guess they like drinking the free stuff they get!)

Don't mean to hijack my own thread, but I also don't like Duty-Free on the plane selling cartons of cigarettes to passengers who smoke but can't on the plane.

I don't smoke, but to me that's just damn cruel.

Just my 2 cents on THAT.

I went through Frankfurt just a couple of weeks ago and bought some liqueur at the Duty-Free shop after going through security. Took that on the plane with me. When I landed in Montreal I picked up my suitcase from the baggage carrousel, went through customs, placed the bottle of liqueur into the suitcase, checked that suitcase. THEN I went through security again to go to my connecting flight.

Unless you have an opportunity to place liqueur into checked luggage don't buy it if you have any connecting flights ahead of you.

Beatrix,

MORE than 3 ounces of liquor?

Did I just run into someone who was confused about the rules of duty-free, or should I have just not bought mine there?

I DO know this: From now on, I will buy my Asbach Uralt and put it into my checked bags.

True story: I got caught in Rothenburg during the 9.11 tragedy, and when I finally DID get to fly, I tried to take 2 bottles of Sekt with me on my carry-on as not to take a chance on them breaking in my luggage.

Went to check-in, and was told they couldn't go with me on the plane in the carry-on, so guess what I did?

Good thing it was 4 hours till boarding! LOL!

Bill: it was a 1.17 liter bottle of Campari!!! As I said, I never carried this bottle through security, that's the key. I bought it BEHIND security and packed it into checked luggage BEFORE entering the next security for my connecting flight.

There was a story recently of a man who downed nearly a liter bottle of vodka he had just purchased because security wasn't going to let him take it on the plane. He ended up in the emergency room. I believe I picked it up on Reuters so probably occured in Europe.

If you have a security check in your future, don't plan on carrying on a bottle of anything bigger than 3 oz.

If security is behind you, you are okay.

There is still the 1 liter limit for customs but I don't think the additional duty for going over is prohibitive. Any one have experience with that?

Thanks for explaining - sorry to be so dense.
