Space in name on passport

My last name has a capital letter as the first and third letter - like DeBurg. Our plane ticket is listed without the space (as it should be). Our passport put a space between the second and third letters (De Burg). We even sent it back to the State Dept to fix it but they returned it saying they made no error. Anyone else ever have this happen between their passport and ticket? Did you have any problems w/ security?

Hi Brita,

... we suggest you call someone in the US State Department to discuss your concern. It you are able to sleep better as a result, the call would likely be worthwhile.
... Happy travels! P

According to a State Dept. agent, they have a Style Book that they go by and the way YOU want your name written makes no difference to them at all. They write such names according to their book. What an independent company does is their own business and the State Dept does not involve themselves with what a private business does. I went thru this some years ago for a friend.

Welcome to the wonderful world of government contracted services. As said above, the State Department doesn't actually produce these things anymore so their control is limited.

Brita, my name also has a capital letter as the first and third letter with no space. The 6 passports I've had over the years have had a space between 2nd and 3rd letters. I have had no issue what so ever when traveling (the most recent travel was Dec 2007). I always buy my airline tickets on line and usually the reservation drops the 2nd capital letter.

Oddly enough, when my Father came to Ellis Island with his parents, our last name had no second capital letter, they were given it by whomever processed their immigration papers.

You should have no problems.

Interesting - I had no idea that was contracted out - but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised!

A lot of things like that are contracted out now. In the State Department's case, I don't know if you remember but earlier this year there was a mini-scandal when it was revealed that a contractor had accessed the passport files of McCain, Obama and Clinton.
