Sony TV LED - USA to EUROPE

Oi. Como estas ? Tudo bem ? Hi. How are you ? Everything ok ? :)

I live in America but I have decide to move to Portugal and I want to bring my television to Portugal to use the Digital television - Portuguese version is called DTD stands for Digital terrestrial television in Portugal. Anyway, look at my tv label. Sorry about my English.

The label says "110-240 V ~", so it will cope with Portugese voltage. You would need to change the plug of course.

But the big problem is that different countries use totally different and incompatable digital TV standards. In North America they use a standard called "ATSC", In Europe they use "DVB-T". Read this article here. Your TV probably will not work outside North America.
TV's are big heavy thing's, expensive to send across the Atlantic but cheap to buy. You would be better off selling it and buying a new one in Portugal.

"Sorry about my English."

Are you joking? Your English is great! If only my French was that good...

And I'm afraid you will need to buy a new TV in Portugal. Sorry about that. I hope all goes well for you there!

It would probably work in tandem with a set top receiver or PVR running on Portuguese standards, but as said above the costs are not likely to be favourable.

Hi Eileen,

Thank you kindly. I tried.

Marco and Eileen, are you sure ? I did called Sony of America and they said to buy an adaptor and I am good to go. I do not understand.

Chris, maybe I should ? Since Sony of America said I could but they didn't mention about Digital television, thought. What about Satellite Cable ? Hmm.

I think I gave the same advice as Sony did - the TV will work if you buy an additional receiver in Portugal and connect it to the TV (probably using the HDMI socket).

This is technically correct, but the cost of transporting the TV and buying the receiver may be the same or more as selling your USA standard TV and buying another in Portugal.

Using an HDMI with a Portuguese set top box (isn't that an anachronism now that TVs are only a couple of inches deep?) may do the job. The Canadian spec TV made in Mexico by a Japanese company for use in the US and now Portugal should have no problem with the electricity, and with the square in a square logo it also doesn't need to be grounded (earthed). Just pop a $1 plug adapter on it and plug it in and have at it. You may even find that you can make the TV put instructions on its setup in Portuguese.

The problem will be the signal output of the box that you use to get the DTD. The TV won't do it without a box, I wouldn't think - although your instruction manual (you did keep that and know where it is or have downloaded one, right?) may allow it - I haven't read your manual and don't know the specs for that particular TV.

An HDMI cable may do the trick if both the TV and the box have that facility. Otherwise it will be an older style hookup - the instruction manual will say, probably with drawings - and if it is an older style hookup I would be concerned. The TV speaks North American NTSC/ATSC, and the box probably speaks European PAL/DVB-T. These are ways of describing how to create pictures on a TV and create colour, and the two standards are very different. Only a very few countries in the world speak NTSC/ATSC including North America and Japan. Most of the rest of the world speaks PAL/DVB-T.

You may also see in your manual if your TV is dual standard and how to switch to PAL/DVB-T if it is.

Come back with further questions.
