Someone to Go in My Place?

Hi,
I have a solo 10-day trip planned for Prague, Vienna, and Budapest starting Wednesday, June 26 that I can't go on due to a foot injury. (I can walk a bit somewhat but not much, and I'm scared to get into a situation in which I injure myself worse while traveling alone). I have pre-booked the airlines, hotels, intercountry train/bus transfers, and one ballet at the National Theatre in Prague.

As of now, I haven't been able to get ahold of the airlines (Condor) or the hotels (Hotel Stefanie in Vienna, Three Corners Anna in Budapest) for refunds, but I'm not holding out hope because I booked everything as nonrefundable through Expedia and I haven't had luck with refunds like this in the past.

My question is, is there any way to give my hotel rooms, intercountry train/bus tickets, or ballet tickets to someone who could use them?

I think this is a shot in the dark, but I'd love for someone to get use out of them. Thanks!

I have no advice, but wanted to say how nice of you!

It sounds as if you did not take out any trip insurance and chose to self-insure. However, there is sometimes trip insurance associated with the credit cards that one uses to purchase flights/hotels, etc. It certainly can't hurt to check what the policy is for the credit card you used for your purchases.

I am very sorry that your injured yourself and are having to postpone your trip!

So sorry to hear about your foot injury. Before you give away the hotel rooms, contact the hotels, explain your situation. While the rates are non-refundable, I did an Internet search on Expedia policies and refunds from hotels and posters noted that Expedia has made exceptions with the written approvals of the hotels themselves, so it is worth a try. If the hotels won't release you from the full costs, perhaps they will only charge you one night for cancellation, it is worth a try.

For the ballet ticket, you might want to see if you can use a resale app like Viagogo: https://www.viagogo.com/. I searched online and the Ballet you are going to is listed, but has no tickets available, you may be able to sell yours on the site. I have only purchased tickets off Viagogo before that were resale tickets (in the UK), but it worked well for me as a purchaser.

Good luck and I hope your foot heals quickly.

faunasol,

That is a shame about your injury.

As a suggestion, maybe PM the Webmaster to inquire about him possibly making a (temporary) "sticky" thread where it will be noticed more at the top of the Gen Europe.

You have a few days to play with - hotels would need to be contacted to change the names and allow time for mailing or switching over bus/train/ballet tickets to the new owner. I'm not sure how all that would work.

Really sad that you’re unable to go! I hope your foot fully heals, and you’re able to go at a later date! You’re very smart to not risk further injury while traveling!

I had a non refundable hotel booked for Bellingham, WA for us to stay after a concert. It was through an on-line site similar to Expedia. We had a freak snowstorm, so I called the hotel to let them know we couldn’t come. They allowed us to have the room an alternate night, so we enjoyed a weekend this Spring.

Is there a chance that you could postpone your trip a couple of months and still go? If so, contact the hotels to see if they will honor your reservation for a date in September, for instance.

I had to cancel a trip to Italy last year due to illness and a few of the hotels gave me a credit for future use.
