Well, through some additional research, I am able to receive a call on the Ipad, but only when I plug some headphones into it. This is excellent progress, but I can't hear it ring at all; I can just see the screen showing an incoming call. Is there a way around this? If I buy a small, portable speaker that I plug in, will I be able to hear the Ipad ring and hit the answer button to take the calls? Thanks again!!
Valerie, Have you considered using a Cellphone instead of Skype? It would undoubtedly be much easier and less "awkward" to accomplish, although more expensive (if it's for "work", possibly that would be deductible?). Some of the "travel phone" firms provide a feature that "maps" your existing number to your travel number, so that anyone calling your regular number reaches you wherever you are. The disadvantage of that approach is that you may be receiving calls at 03:00 from people who don't know you're in Europe or don't bother checking the time. Of course the the same problem will occur with Skype ringing on your Laptop / iPad (possibly at all hours of the night). Good luck and happy travels!
You've likely searched the internet and found that this is a problem with Skype on the iPad. Here's a link to a blog where it's discussed http://freepctophonecalls.blogspot.com/2011/02/skype-for-ipad-voip-calls-on-ipad.html As a way around it, you might have to get a local sim card and have the Skype calls forwarded to it. Incoming calls are free just about everywhere in Europe within the country where the sim card is issued. You'll need an unlocked GSM phone to use in Europe which you can buy fairly cheaply there if you don't have one.
