Check out the new Appenzell pack at the Travel Store! It is, as they suggest, just the thing for younger kids to take as their own carryon bag. If you got them the little $9.95 pocked pack as well for their "day bag", they should be set.

My 11 year old used the smaller version of Rick's carry on for our 5 week trip last year and had no problem with it. He was even able to carry it with his wooden sword sticking out of the top for most of the trip!
We went to the Rick Steves Travel center in Edmonds and they too suggested this bag for our 6 year old. She is looking forward to carrying her own pack just like mom and dad.
