Hi All.
I am a 57 year old male who has only made 7 trips to Europe, usually with friends. My last trip was a solo 2017 trip to London for 7 days. I chose London because I had been there before, the city is awesome full of culture and history and the people are friendly. Solo in London was easy and awesome-met many great people because you speak the same language and have to talk to people. Londoners were very friendly and helpful and even fellow travelers were easy to bond with.
My question is where are other great places to go as a solo traveler? Where can I find the same connection to locals and travelers that I met in the UK?
The Netherlands is probably a good destination. Lots of people speak English and chatting is fairly normal in the culture. You get used to the "Dutch directness" once you encounter it a few times, but in general people are friendly. There can be a bit of difference between crowded cities and quieter neighbourhoods or rural areas of course, but that applies all over probably.
Anywhere you want.....I've been traveling solo for over 10 years and I'm older than you are.
Go to places you want to see and experience. You will undoubtedly run into other singles who speak English and will be happy to find you as well.
You may want to look at OAT (Overseas Adventure Travel). They are good for solo travelers because for most of their trips they do not charge solos an extra fee. Also, there is a maximum of 16 people on their tours.
I'll second the Netherlands for solo travel. I also loved Iceland as well.
I've been traveling solo (and female) for over 30 years and have enjoyed everywhere I've been, but I admit there are places I have loved more. :-)
- England, of course, and really anywhere in the UK, because there is no language barrier.
- The Netherlands. As others have noted, it's very easy to get around, lovely culture, great sights and most everyone speaks English.
- Germany, but that's because I speak some German. However, i do love the country and the people, and most Germans, especially in the larger cities speak English. That said, both Germans and Dutch are not really the type of people to immediately bond with a tourst, so don't expect the type of camaraderie you would find in the UK.
- Iceland. I found the residents very friendly and everyone there speaks English.
But having said all that, if you're traveling just to connect with locals, there really aren't that many places that will let you do that (unless you learn the language). So don't let that stop you from traveling to countries with a language barrier. I spent several weeks in Turkey and loved my stay there. The country is incredibly beautiful and diverse, and I had an amazing time visiting. But there is definitely a language barrier there, so you're not going to find the same connection you found in the UK (although the people are very friendly). However, my trip there is one of the highlights of my travels, because of the culture and beauty I found.
don't forget Ireland of course
IMHO there are very few places solo travel doesn't work. I've been to SE Asia, Europe, South America, usually a combination of solo time and tour. If you're wanting to communicate with people exclusively in English, the prior responses cover places that you'll have better luck doing that. I wouldn't limit yourself though, go where a place suits your interests (which by the way would be helpful to specify so people can give you better answers).
If this trip is in the summer, I suggest Germany especially Berlin, France especially Paris. Most of my travels are are solo .
Anywhere in the world you have wanted to visit is a great place to go.
Thank you all. I am now thinking Iceland or Ireland. I like the suggestions for the Netherlands as I have wanted to see Amsterdam for a while now.
Another vote for Iceland. I just returned last week from our 7th trip and there is still ssh much more to explore there. The people there are very helpful and almost everyone speaks English, so it is very easy even if you run into problems.
Good choice if you've settled on the Netherlands for the solo traveling from the linguistic perspective, very interesting culturally too.
On the continent I don't travel with friends, never have, either only solo or with family members.
Great to hear from all the fellow solo travelers.
