I will be spending the summer backpacking through europe this summer alone (Im a 27 year old black female). I am a BIG Jewish history buff and wanted to make a to Poland to visit Auschwitz. I have been reading suggestions that Poland my not be too safe for a Solo black traveler. Can someone please give me some feedback on this? I would really like to hear from other black females or males who have been to poland.

I'm not a person of color, but I've talked to other black travelers who have encountered some harassment problems in Eastern Europe. Not from ordinary folks, but from skinhead type gangs. My gut feeling is that you will be fine during the daylight hours in the typical tourist areas. I would use caution at night; especially if there is going be drinking going on. I've been to the Auschwitz Camps, and I don't' think you will encounter any problems, there are lots of other tourists around, and there is police/security on duty. If it will make you feel more comfortable then take an organized day tour from Krakow. Krakow is a beautiful city!
My daughter and I made sure we were in our hostels or hotels before dark. Although, we are not black...just felt it was safer for females to be out and about at night.
