Are solid deodorants exempt from the 3 oz. liquid, gel and aerosol restrictions for carry-on bags? Do they have to be included in the 1 quart baggie? Thanks.
No and Yes. In fact, my wife had a 2.7 oz solid deodorant taken in Salt Lake City because it looked too large even through it clearly stated on the label that it was 2.7 oz and it was mostly used up. Didn't make any difference. Cannot be to careful. Short, retired, gray hair school teachers are always a potentail threat.
Solid deodorants don't have to be included in the 1-qt. bag. They aren't liquids or gels.
Interesting question. I have travelled overseas 4 times to US and Europe since this restriction has been in place and a have found - mascara in bag through south east asia but nowhere else in the world. Lipstick OK everywhere except Hong Kong where it has to go in the bag. Solid deoderant OK everywhere I went. I wouldn't call lipstick and mascara gels or liquids but obiously some do. To be on the safe side put it in the bag.
Karen, I just called American Airline last week about this very question. The customer service rep. said "No, solid deodorants are not considered liquid or gel and that it would be fine to include in my carry-on". Aerosol deodorants must be included in the quart-size bag. If I were you, I would call your airline and ask them in person. They must know me by my first name, I have called them so many times with questions.
Thank you all for your replies. It seemed like such a silly question, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere else.
On my last trip to France I used one of those solid crystal-type deodorants for the first time. It worked great and is not affected by the liquids rules at all. You can find them at natural food stores, such as Whole Foods or even Trader Joes.
