Soliciting ideas for 1-week trip in Nov

I have the opportunity to take a solo, one-week trip to anywhere I want the week before Thanksgiving. I will most likely end up in Europe to maximize my time. The other requirement is that it be a direct flight on Delta (or partner) out of ATL or JFK.

Now to the fun stuff - my preferences. This is where I'd love your help.

  • Recently visited the UK, Ireland, Italy, Paris, and Bruges, so rather not go back so soon
  • Don't want to rent a car or fly while there
  • Would prefer to stay in a single location for the duration
  • Needs to be considered very safe or my wife will worry and put a damper on things

That's pretty much it. I'm an adventurous traveler, so lay it on me!

Where in Spain or Portugal might you like to go?

Not researched it, but I suspect Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon are non-stops from ATL or JFK

Weather that time of year should be agreeable

Berlin. Many now consider it the creative capitol of Europe. Compact, easy to navigate central city, with efficient public tranportation. . Safe. Steeped in history. Nonstop from JFK on Delta.

You will not run out of places to see/things to do.

Edit: I had verified the nonstop on the Delta web site; may not run every day.

I think Madrid with day trips to Toledo and Segovia.

Amsterdam, Milan, Munich, and Copenhagen have non-stop flights from one or the other airports you mentioned. I’d never say no to Spain either.

I agree with joe32F and Cala, Spain seems like a good option for you. Madrid, Sevilla, or Barcelona are all worthy of week long stays with plenty to see and many day trip options without needing a car. Autumn is generally a good time to visit most of the Iberian peninsula both weather and crowd wise. The crime rate in Spain is relatively low compared to many other European countries, lower then Italy, France, UK, Ireland, Belgium, Germany.

We have been in Andalusia twice in November and it was perfect weather for exploring the area. Stay in Sevilla.

Definitely somewhere in Spain. We loved Madrid, could easily spend a week there.

I'm all in on the Berlin suggestion - absolutely the correct amount of time to get a decent feel for the history of this great European city. The negative is it fails on the direct Delta flight, only United flies direct from Newark to BER, unless something has changed. Good Luck picking your spot.

Wow. Didn’t expect so many responses so quickly. And good ones, too!

Madrid and Berlin are great suggestions.

Does weather matter? Madrid can be quite raw and cold in November. I shifted my day to Segovia as original planned day had snow flurries. But easy to spend a week there with some day trips. Southern Spain would be warmer. Can you fly to Sevilla or Malaga direct? Sevilla gives you day trips as does Malaga. Both have been past cities of culture and Malaga has dozens of museums and some well preserved roman ruins.

For November, I would suggest visiting Lisbon. The weather averages 65 degrees F and 53 degree F nights. Many from the U.K. go on vacation down in the Algarve Region because of the good weather.

My niece and her husband had a very nice condo outside of Faro.
