I've heard they recently banned smoking in restaurants in Italy but does anyone know if they allow smoking in the outdoor seating area. I went there there about five years ago and all the smokers were outside in the prime seating locations and it was like eating in a gas chamber! Thanks.
Yes, terraces outside are for the smokers or for those who do not object to smoking. Guess you'll have to eat inside. No doubt the "prime seating locations" were occupied by Italians. Their country, their rules.
Yes, smoking is allowed at the outside tables. To double check, simply look for ash trays on the tables, if you see them, you know some one will be smoking.
We visited Rome last year, really wanted to sit outside - kind of the premier seating, so you can people watch, but ended up inside...can't stand the smoke.
Jenny - All the smokers will be outside and odds are you will be influenced by one. There are just enough smokers both Italian and other Europeans that probability dictates it
Jenny, I think by and largel there must be fewer smokers then when you were there three years ago,, because this summer my 12 yr old and I did not find it was like eating in a gas chamber at most places. There was an occaisonal smoker, but it wasn't that bad at all. Frankly I found some nationalities were heavier smokers then others, and they weren't actually the Western Europeons!!
I also found when it was really hot that sitting inside where there was a/c was more comfortable sometimes,, I mean it was like 100 degrees some days.. Yikes
