We've booked a couple of Airbnbs for our trip to Germany and Italy next spring, and I noticed (after the fact) that two of them don't have a smoke alarms included. (It's actually unclear whether they're equipped with them or not.) Has anyone ever brought along a portable smoke alarm/detector, and if so, what brand(s) do you recommend? Thanks in advance...
If you are staying in a quaint older building you might also consider a Carbon Monoxide detector too as many of the flats in those old buildings have gas heat, gas water heater, gas stove, gas oven. And in addition to the Smoke detector and the Carbon Monoxide detector you might consider a portable door alarm as there is no front desk to provide security.
I spend about 3 months a year in Europe AirBnb's and I haven't worried about any of it, but if it provides comfort ... do it.
One thing to be certain of is that its a legally operating short term rental; that might help ensure that it is also code compliant (which may or may not require the detectors).
Enjoy your stay
Like always Germany is a sort of a patchwork also when we are talking about Smoke Detectors - this might help a bit:

Hi- We just bought a Fire Sentry Smoke Alarm i9040 Micro Profile. Box says 3 7/8" size so it's very small and easy to tuck in. It was less than $6 at Walmart. We will see how it works!
