smaller luggage size requirement on Icelandic Air

No way to avoid new requirements for 7.8" thickness for carry-on. Where is a good place to purchase?

Try Amazon. On the Iceland forum, a poster mentioned this for luggage and it fit's Iceland Air's sizes.

I have used an old American Tourist suitcase that worked, but it's old enough that I can't find a link for that particular bag. I did buy some LeSportsac weekender bags for our next trip there. The medium bag fits the carryon size easily, but the large is just a tad bit too deep. It is a soft sided bag though, so as long as it is not stuffed, it will work. So I ended up buying both bags.

My carry-on luggage was fine on an outbound flight on Icelandic Air, but then it wasn't upon returning. I'd guess it's due to buying a few things that made the luggage puff out a bit.

Hi, are you thinking wheels or backpack style?

I’ve packed my Cotopaxi Allpa 35L and have been practicing walking around with it. (Previously, I took a 2-wheel carry on for international trips.). These are the specs for it: 56 x 30 x 25 cm
I just measured my depth, and it’s easily within your 7.8” requirement. Since the sides have a squishy flexibility, it conforms to how much or little you pack. FYI - the contents are packed for a 1-month trip.

Icelandair specs: Maximum size (including handles and wheels): 21.6x15.7x7.8 inches (55x40x20 cm).

@Jean

I travel with the same pack and had no trouble with Ryanair for 6 consecutive flights... they tried to nail me on the 7th but a couple in front of me had walked through with shopping bags and huge totes without paying for priority and when I asked about it, they said to go ahead.

Have you flown with Ryan with it? Did it go ok?

This one is very similar to the one that Mister E posted, but way cheaper: MOLNIA Travel Backpack for Men, 47L Carry On Backpack, 17.3inch Laptop Backpack Flight Approved, with 3 Packing Cubes & 1 Shoe Bag, Expandable Business Suitcase, Weekender Duffel Bag, Grey-green https://a.co/d/f8QJzKy

I’m bringing it on a condor flight that has very small carryon limits.

Rick Steevs roller fit the seatac Iceland bin in April 2023. A Samsonite spinner ok on other airlines did not. They are quite strict there and if it doesn’t easily drop in wo help it was rejected. Size includes wheels. They checked the “oversized” one for free as a checked bag was included in our ticket. No issue with personal item. Lots of people got rejected with comments “it has worked on every other airline”. I like my spinner so just planning to check next flight with them and my main time use is on and off trains and walking. The RS roller did fine as well on all surfaces.

We have Samsonite bags that we brought on this trip. After our British Airways flight was cancelled a few hours before departure we got rebooked on Icelandair. The bags just fit in the check bag size box and the associates were checking every carryon bag.

Real1shark--Hmmm, I nee to try my RS bag then! I think I will take it to CA with me on my upcoming trip and put it in the sizer at Iceland Air just to see. Thanks for the idea!

Travel Pro makes a 19" carry-on with the 7.8 dimensions; it is made for international travel on smaller European planes. I recently purchased one from Amazon for my trip next month on a smaller airline. I haven't used it yet, but it seems to be very well made.

I have looked at so many options. I might just buy a large tote from LL Bean for the carry-on. I've also found a backpack that will work as a carry-on, and I could sew a tote to the exact dimensions of the personal item.

Lucky Girl, I have the Travelpro Maxlite bag marketed to fit under the seat. It probably does on some aircraft but I found room up in the bins. I like the bag, but it was a bit small for everything I needed on my 3 week trip. I am using it for my next trip to Iceland and Portugal. My personal item served me for the additional space. One small issue I had was rolling it through the narrow aisles. It would catch now and then. All in all, I love TravelPRO. I also have the 21” roll aboard, which is fine for domestic or I check it on the way home.

Over the years though, I’m getting tired of navigating the airport with my bag, as I travel solo most of the time. Also, I’m short and sometimes have difficulty raising the 21” bag up to the bin. Starting to seriously think about checking bags in the future, especially if I am traveling solo.

Then check the bag? I’ve never understood why this topic ever comes up, yet it does over and over. Too big? Check it.

Well, the last time I did that, we arrived back at MSP while our bags remained in Paris;)

The only thing about under-the-seat bags is that if you're over a certain height then you're really scrunched up in basic economy. 8-hour flight that way? No thank you.

The travel pro the I purchased is not an underseat bag, it is designed to go in the upper bins. Case Dimensions: 19 in x 15 in x 7.75 in, Overall Dimensions (includes wheels & carry handles): 21.75 in x 15.75 in x 7.75 in, Weight: 5.3 pounds ; Volume : 39 L

I’m not one to flaunt the rules, but from KEF to IAD this week, people were carrying all kinds of bags way bigger than the advertised regulation size, and nobody batted an eyelash. The plane wasn’t completely full, so maybe that was why. We checked for not in fear of being busted at the gate.
