With de decline of the american $ it makes so difficult to
plan a budget trip to the country of Italy. If I decide to
go which is the minimun amount per day that I should plan to spend?I'm thinking to visit small towns that should be less expensive that to say,Florence,Rome,Venice etc.
Whats your opinion? Many thanks in advance for your time in replying.parana.
Hi Rocco,
First question, where in Italy do you plan on visiting? Remember one thing, in the larger cities there is quite a bit to see, either on foot or by bus. Most likely you can spend a couple of days in Rome, Florence, or Venice and beleive me you won't see everything. If you travel to the smaller towns yes it may be less expensive for sleeping accomodations but meals aren't much less. Another thing is in small towns after a few hours your ready to move on. I guess it's a toss of a coin, go to the larger cities, spend more on hotels and see more,or go to smaller towns, see less and spend more on traveling town to town.

Italy has much to offer. It does not come cheap. Your best bets for saving money lie with reduction in lodging and food. Campings (our campsites) are everywhere and often have bungalows. They are a tiny fraction of hotels. Hostels are also rather cheap.
As to food, avoid restaurant meals as much as you can and buy groceries. Making your own meals saves wads.
Rocco, there's a duplicate thread in the section of the Travelers' Helpline that is specific to Italy (as opposed to this one that is "General Europe". You might want to post there instead. (Or read some of the other postings first.)
Just a thought.
